Every album release is inherently a "pr stunt" so for that to be pointed in an accusatory fashion is completely misplaced, especially when there are so many other brands/companies etc that are blatantly giving a surface-level socials shit. Why's it even a bad thing for RTJ to raise their stock when that in kind has the power to educate and mobilise?

It's one thing to just release the album and take advantage of the situation. It's an entirely different situation when Killer Mike is up at a podium speaking out and being a leader first, musician second.

Fair enough, I didn't have enough context about their prior releases and I've never cared enough to examine their message in prior albums, although they've always been politically charged but a lot of rap is nowadays.
I'm spinning this again atm and my biggest problem with it and with their past albums is it just sounds so damn homogeneous. Legit hard to distinguish between tracks. El p and killer mike both have great intensity but their voices are kind of grating after a while too. I feel like the actual music in past killer mike and el p solo stuff was much more emotionally resonant, like "willie.burke sherwood" or "poisonville kids no wins", whereas most of rtj's stuff is just hard beats

Yo anatelier I specifically said it's a logical choice to raise their stock lol

Well yeah once you walked back your thoughts a little lol, it's fine to just say you don't like it. I know exactly what you mean about it feeling somewhat homogenous, that's mostly what's holding me back from a higher rating tbh. Especially the run of three or four tracks prior to the closing two. Sort of like a Sleigh Bells production approach where all the dials have been turned up

They definitely released RtJ3 'early/unannounced' as a surprise for Christmas
It mucked up AOTY list season for all the mainstream outlets

Relinquished: was just trying to tilt ColeT.
Anatelier: yeah those were the ones that really bored me the most during both my listens

I’ve never heard anyone call this a PR stunt

Dude it's so sad. Fuck
"I’ve never heard anyone call this a PR stunt"
never even once in the history of this album's existence? That's weird.

I haven’t listened to this yet, but it’s strange to go after El-P and Killer Mike for doing what hundreds of musicians do all the time: release an album early and (sort of) unannounced. And Killer Mike’s advocacy for his community and activism within political spheres is well documented; this release sounds to me like it’s full of the same integrity so prevalent in all his projects.

I openly said I didn't know their past release calendar and if this was a thing they've done in the past or not and if so then it invalidates what I said, but it's more fun to be mad I get it ;D
