this album is so good, if i had any complaints it'd be that the lyrical content doesn't really delve in as personal of a direction as their last record, but that's just my "must be personal" bias seeping in.

Great album. love The Defiant.

If this album is so generic like some of you are insisting it is, why are there no bands that sound like Trivium out there ? Also why are people insisting on saying they are just plain metalcore ? They mix in so many styles from thrash, prog, melodic death metal, death metal, heavy metal etc.. that you can't really just call them metalcore.

Just a thought..

Because Trivium doesn't sound like anything else, they sound like everything else - all at once. They've taken all their influences growing up, thrown them in a basket and shook it. Every album is a result of what jumbles up in there while it's shaking.

To put it simply, they are metalcore. Whether it's the style or the formulaic song structures or the resorting to scream/clean/scream/clean vocal styles being all of the things in that list you've mentioned does not un-make them metalcore. I'd also use terms like "prog" pretty loosely in the regards of everything post-Shogun.

And that's the beauty of it.

Also all the other bands out there just clearly lack the talent lmao

See that's where I disagree. If you look at other bands who are labeled metalcore such as Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red etc.. they mainly use breakdowns, simpler guitar work and structures, barely no solos or none at all compared to Trivium. The difference is like night and day. Yes Trivium's earlier albums can be classified as metalcore but as of late I don't think so. The mixture of clean/harsh vocals is not exclusive to metalcore either.

I’ve always thought of these guys as like a metalcore/thrash hybrid... like if Metallica grew up on At the Gates and Death instead of Diamond Head and Priest

Shadows Fall have been doing exactly what you just described here since the late 90s though lol

The only thing that makes Trivium unique to my ears is Heafy's voice. Nobody has a more boring voice so i always know it's him

This album as some cool moments, but it's kinda all over the place with the songwriting

This is bold. These guys and more solo and some of their simple riffs aren't as simple as you're suggesting. And to echo InflamesThras666's use of Shadows Fall as an example I'd consider them along with the likes of God Forbid very similar in style (all using that "thrash" basis in their original development). Heafy sounds different to some of that scene yes, but he's not so separated. You could almost make any "vocalist X sounds different to that guy from _______insert band here" argument.

No idea what the hell is going on in this thread, just came to say I quite enjoyed this. Regardless of whatever genre/sub-genre people pigeon-hole it into.

So many Sputnik users seem to be obsessed with music having to sound completely original.

Also @grandbazaar, you clearly not familiar with August Burns Red. On record, they are far more technically proficient and progressive than Trivium. I understand your point but ABR, and to a lesser extent As I Lay Dying, are not the best examples.

I suppose you could argue that riff-wise, but show me an ABR solo more technically proficient than the one in Into the Mouth of Hell We March.

And yeah, I can understand people's gripes with artists rehashing the same material over and over again.
