I could see both arguments. 2.5 being the majority of ratings means that you’re rating on a bell curve more or less. That’s what I used to do when I last cared about ratings like 10 years ago. But presumably things that are totally crap don’t get released that often so a fair distribution might have a negative skew, putting your average at 3-3.5

depends on the reviewer and topic in question
one reviewer can approach this either ignorant or knowledgeable of Ulcerate's past material and build context from thereon
sometimes it could be hard to divorce past work but I usually rate by what's presented. if not I'd be rating all of Cave In's works against their debut and that's not fair.
