Tracks 1 and 2 are nice lube jobs and Track 3 is the ace but it's all downhill after that.

'I mean he hasn't even worked in any grindcore here what an idiot'
Nope, just a shitload of boring, cookie-cutter alt-country.
¯_(ツ)_/¯

'cookie-cutter alt-country'
don't know if its the word cookie but it already sounds delicious

(fwiw, by and large I cannot stand grindcore, though few exceptions exist.)

This is far from cookie-cutter alt-country. In fact I barely feel comfortable calling this country, it’s more like some kind of country-influenced cosmic dream indie pop - and the guy’s background is more centered in post-punk/synthpop from what I can tell. It’s great stuff for sure and I enjoy it for what it is but it reminds me a lot of Orville Peck in that it feels like it’s kind of trying to sell a more image-focused, packaged and filtered version of country to an audience that might not normally seek out country. Country as aesthetic rather than style. None of this is necessarily bad though and I don’t mean to sound like a gatekeeper, just my two cents.

tectactoe you really don't like Vaguely Satisfied or Strawberry Lite at all??
|
| |
'Vaguely Satisfied' is good (6/10). Nothing especial but actively enjoyable. Was far less fond of 'Strawberry Lite', though (4/10). I maintain that the best track here is 'The Day It Rained Forever' (8/10), followed closely by either one of the first two tracks.
2.5 is not a particularly bad album score. I didn't hate this. But after two full playthroughs, my lasting impression is an inoffensive shrug.

I trust tectacbro on this. Although I REALLY enjoy the run from 1-3 and the Austra track. Really interesting mesh of styles and harmonies, great stuff.
When he goes stripped down voice, he just sounds like Michael Bublé.

I actually hear some light Alt-J vibes in his voice when he goes stripped down

‘Something Relative’ sounds like it should have been the best song on My Morning Jacket’s ‘It Still Moves’, coming straight after ‘Golden’ in the track list maybe
Seconding this sentiment from page 1. (Though not that it would be the best on that album, that would still be "I Will Sing You Songs".) But early MMJ is definitely a really good comparison here.

This is literally what makes it better than just country artists lol

Nuclear take there FlagAsh.
To be fair though a lot of famous artists that get called country (i.e. the bro-country variety) do the same thing, but instead they try to sell the country aesthetic to the lowest common denominator of mindless pap; this on the other hand is lovely music no matter how you cut it, and the country aesthetic is enough to make me enjoy it in that sense even if it's not the most "authentic" or streamlined thing out there. Agreed with Doof that this is probably the first thing this year to make me really want to hear it over and over again.
