Funny that people are complaining about the clean vox. It's the harsh vox that are the offenders here for me.

This feels more riff-centric.

Doesn't feel like new territory at all but as always they remain one of the most stimulating prog acts to listen to in our generation.

Just listened to all their previous LPs (except the debut) today while working. My first impressions are that Fluid... is probably their worst (even though I still enjoy it). Tempted to go for Levitations as my fav... or maybe Valley of Smoke. They all have a lot to offer though.

Good analysis. This is so bland in comparison to everything they've done before.

Even if it's comparatively bland in relation to their earlier work, this doesn't necessarily mean it's an average record; this is still far more entertaining than most modern post-metal out there (with obvious exceptions).

Post metal has been in creative bankruptcy for a long time now - if we don't count the big names in the game

That's not at all true Pika. Dig deeper, there are some fantastic PM bands out there right now below the surface. Meniscus, Caspian, We Lost the Sea, Kerretta, Trees, Toundra, to name a few.

You are naming post-rock bands there, bud. Don't mean to be genre gatekeeping but I wouldn't call the ones I recognise in that list post-metal.

Toundra and We Lost the Sea are great yeah. Not a fan of If These Trees Could Talk if that's what you meant by Trees. As for Caspian, I think the quality of their releases has gone downhill after WS.

Well, if you mean post-metal by strictly Isis-Neurosis types, then I suppose, but you still have Pelican. Post-rock itself is doing fine.

Yeah If These Trees Could talk even though, like so many other post-rock bands, they take 5 years to release albums. That's a problem for the genre.

Yes, CoL, Isis, Intronaut, Amenra, Dirge - that's what I was mainly referring to.

I should go deeper into that side of the genre. I love Isis and CoL, but that's as far as I've gone.

Start with the latest Dirge (FR) - that album probably has the best sounding production in post-metal. Also check out The Moth Gatherer.

And I'm gonna assume you've heard Rosetta and Amenra.

I second that Dirge album. And the one prior! Excellent production and killer vocals too.

I have heard Rosetta, but not Amenra! I'll give them a try too and report back.
