I feel like the remake is going to be OK, but we really didn't need it.
SH1 is the one that needs a remake. But it needs to be by a competent team, and Bloober ain't it.

Have never played a SH game (have seen the first film a couple times), but this OST is just awesome

stop remaking games please
the first one is the only one that is essential (at least in regards to survival horror - if you hate survival horror I guess you shouldn't bother with any of them) and it doesn't need a remake

despite 3 being my favorite, I'd say SH2 is definitely essential survival horror.
SH1, 2 and 3 all are, imo. 1 for the groundbreaking atmosphere and shift away from being combat-focused, 2 for the psychological horror and design themes, and 3 as the culmination and technical peak of PS2-era survival horror and technical excellence. And all three because Akira Yamaoka is a fucking genius.

No love whatsoever for 4 huh

I do still love 4, for a lot of different reasons, but it's pretty disjointed and wasn't meant to be a SH game originally. I think that shows.

It was meant to be a main entry from the very beginning iirc, the opposite is a rumor debunked a while ago, it was developed almost simultaneously with 3 and the main focus was to deliver a different experience compared to the older games

That's a really weird swerve of information from what I remember. Interesting.
I can strike the "wasn't meant to be a SH game" part out and still feel the same though. Narratively it has arguably the most interesting plot of the Team Silent entries. The music is just as good as two and three. It has some VERY memorable cutscenes. The hauntings in the room are spooky and do a decent job of creating a latent fear from slowly losing your safe sanctuary.
But the main character is a blank doofus. Carting Eileen around doesn't bother me near as much as most people, but it's still a big chore for the second half of the game. Speaking of the second half, it's a less interesting and less rewarding revisiting of the first half. SH123 had infinite inventory space, so creating a new chore of going back to the apartment all the time is a pain and personally I don't think created the fear from scarcity that I think they were going for. SH3 movement, combat...hell I'll just say across the board technical performance was stronger than four.
Honestly I still adore it. SH1 2 and 3 all have their fair share of problems too.

Sh4 is on par with the rest of the series until the second half. I know behind the scenes making the game probably sucked and still appreciate the themes and ideas it had going on. I even think the final boss is probably the best in the series tbh. Unfortunately I think the second half hurts the game so much it can't be overlooked. It's not even that it's an escort mission, re4 proves they can be implemented in fair ways and that came out like a year after this.
Appreciate the link Dtype, it only reinforces my belief that SH won't be good as long as Konami controls it. Could've had a real SH5 smh.
