I'm at the gym listening to a dm track right now and I know it's a Monstrosity track but with a gun to my head I couldn't tell you what song it was. Hell the only reason I know it's Monstrosity is because they're one of my favourite dm bands and I've listened to them enough times to recognize the vocals

Yea I used to think that music was only great if it easily hooked me with memorable parts. Eventually I had to accept that if I was going to explore music as deeply as I was planning, I would have to be more patient and actively listen to things. Still there is a lot of stuff that goes in one ear and out the other without much impact even if I try to give it my best shot. A lot of stuff has really gripping moments but then less so just as much. Sometimes I wish an entire song would be as great as it's best moments, but I know usually that isn't realistic from a compositional standpoint where the music ebbs and flows.
Then there are the albums and songs that are in the "hall of fame" that pretty much demand attention, where you just know it's good and grabs your attention even if you were only half listening, stuff you just know is damn good.
Blood Incantation is way better when actively listening but there are also enough attention demanding moments that it moves up from very good to exceptional. It also helps that the vibe I get is that they do everything for musicality and experience sake rather than to simply be flashy for the sake of it.

Regardless of my points I'll forever be shooting myself in the foot because of my listening habits. I listen once, rate, and move onto the next album. It takes a looong time for me to come back to album again unless I add it to my gym playlist or there's a special circumstance
