Review doesn't really say anything about the actual music. If I wasn't already a fan, I'd have no idea what this would sound like other than "slower than usual idealized Menzinger songs"

a valid point, and one i've found frustrating in other reviews from time to time. it's easy to assume that once a band gets big enough, everyone has heard them or at least heard of them. i edited one of the sentences to show that they are a rock band. thanks.

eh i dont think all reviews should aim to pander to everyone from the uninitiated to the obsessed. if u start tryna describe the sound of the artist in very obvious, materialist terms for ppl who've never heard em before, it can take away from yr actually novel interpretations of the work which are far more interesting and valuable. not to rudely dismiss the criticism but in this day and age if you wanna know what a band sounds like, you can get their song in yr ears within like a couple of seconds. it used to be necessary for writers to actually describe the music so ya had at least some idea of what the fuck you were buying but obviously things have changed.

I also agree with that for sure
But it wasn't too big of a deal to add one word to a sentence

yeah, the production makes it hard to love, especially compared to how good it sounded in ATP. it's weird—they hit their sweet spot when releasing toy soldiers earlier this year, and then freaks sounded like it came out of a trash bin.

The production didn't bother me much until After the Party auto played right after this. The difference was so stark

This is one of my least fave production jobs ever tbh

The Drums are too prevalent on this for my liking, the mix is off, especially on the vocals as well. Still a great record.

I really don't see how the production is such a big deal.

don't let the production distract you from the boring songwriting

I think it's a mix of poor production and a few lackluster songs. I don't see how you can drown out such a good voice like Gregs.

Bro Will, when I said lost in a picture frame I didn't mean I want the music to sound like it's coming from the other side of a wall

The Pitchfork review is mainly just a critique of the lyrical content and aesthetic of the album. There is barely any comment on the music itself. Maybe it's because I grew up listening to music with mainly unintelligible screamed vocals but I've never understood the importance given to lyrics

The production on this is a pretty big bummer. Kind reminds me of how much Captain, We're Sinking's final album was really held back by shoddy production, though on a much more intense degree compared to this. I still quite love the songwriting, and though this is probably the weakest of their last 4 efforts, I still quite enjoy it and it's nice hearing a softer more americana side to the menzies. A 3.7/3.8 seems spot on to me.
