Album is...ok. Catchy and hooky, but formulaic and slight at the same time.
Would love to see these guys experiment a bit a la s/t, Neighborhoods and Dogs Eating Dogs. But without Tom...
That said, they did experiment a bit on the California deluxe version (6/8 is probably their best song since Tom era), but they seem scared to really embrace and go all in. They prefer to play it safe, which is kinda fucking boring.

Was not expecting this to be as good as it is, a definite improvement over California. Some absolute bangers, the first 3 tracks are incredible, "Black Rain" sounds like a straight up Alkaline Trio song, "No Heart To Speak Of" is brilliant and love the guitar on "On Some Emo Shit". Notably darker and heavier (think Stay Together For the Kids chorus with big guitars) than previous efforts. The flaws are mainly the over production, John Feldmann has a habit of making everything super clean, autotune is noticeable on most songs.
Excellent review as well.

Settled on a 3 for this. It's a nice improvement over California but nothing special. I guess if you've liked this band for years that's enough.

Heaven and Darkside are really the only standout songs to me, not only are they the catchiest, but they sound more like skiba/alkaline than it does Blink 182. They rest of the album sounds like an attempt to break into pop mainstream and once again be relevant, which is probably why they opted on using the Blink 182 name instead of a side project name. Skiba is great when Skiba sounds like himself instead of having him try to hit high notes suitable for Tom. 2/5

skiba hitting high notes here is what makes this album tbh. also he hits those notes waaaay better than tom can

Yeah this definitely won’t go higher than a 3 for me. Not bad though.
I’m surprised that the album sales were pretty disappointing, coupled with the fact that their shows over the summer were played to half full venues. What gives? I thought these guys were still a huge live attraction. They headline many huge festivals. Just thought they were a bigger drake. Maybe that was just after California since it was their return after being on hiatus for years.

dude objectivity flies way out the window once skiba hits those high notes, which is most of his vocal lines here

The second half saves some face. There are some solid blink-182 tunes there

Yeah I'm so bias when Skiba goes off screaming and all. Back half of this album is great. Pin the grenade and ransom are awesome

Was dark side actually released as an EP? I had it saved as one on Spotify, but it is no longer on their profile (ye, I know that these are just a few of 9 tracks anyway)
