"If you come into this record expecting 10 separate songs with individual concise statements, you're gonna hate it. Look into what the artist is trying to achieve with the album and judge it on those terms. It's not that difficult."

Devin Townsend review drinking game: take a shot every time someone says a song is the “heaviest thing he’s done since SYL.” Has everyone forgotten Physicist? Lol.
Anyway, album is ok. I respect Devin greatly, but I don’t like his more poppy stuff. This album definitely has its moments, but is filled to the brim with mediocrity (a DT standard) and falls short of being good.

He's stuck in his own game, the hardcore fans will surely love it, but seems so flat

'Has everyone forgotten Physicist? Lol.'
Came out in 2000, before SYL & Alien.

I'm not sure if this is better than Addicted for me right now. It's certainly his most varied release in god knows how long. Fantastic album nonetheless. And the bonus cd tracks are awesome too.

Have to agree with Doof on this one.
He basically perfected the fusion of pop and metal.... that was years ago.
Now all that's left is the kitchen sink genre experimentats (moments of Genesis,Evermore) coating a skeleton of cliches:
- metal/industrial (Meshuggah SYL, Fear Factory, OLD,) and faux avant garde circus music.

Doof's analysis is more a reflection of the fact that this album is unabashed and offensive and thus low-hanging, ripe fruit for shallow surface-level criticism - perfect fodder for maintaining his objectivity obsession.
Love the dude but he didn't even finish the album, and he won't be the only one. Because what self-respecting music fan has time for critical listening of a lengthy, complex album these days when we have fragile online hipster credentials to maintain eh?

Not there quite yet but if I keep loving it as much as I do now I might at some point.

This album is about as divisive as he said it was gonna be, I guess.
Not a masterpiece but it's certainly unique. Reminds me of Infinity but with higher production values and better songwriting. I do think the meandering Devlab-like sections make some songs drag but overall it was a memorable listen.

Sometimes
I'll probably bump my rating up when I check it out again. But I doubt it'll make a 2.5 for me. Perhaps it is better than Ziltoid, at the very least.

So much of this is just an annoying clusterfuck. There are some good ideas, but nowhere near 72 minutes of them.

Or maybe, and hear me out here, he found the listening experience so insufferable that he couldn’t finish the album? Nothing wrong with that, not that I’ve heard this yet tho

Can anyone timestamp Chad Kroegers part? I’m immensely curious.

That's fine, but I don't think you should rate it in that case. The crux of the argument is that it's an easy album for people to auto-1 without using any brainpower, when it reality it clearly isn't the very nadir of music as that rating would suggest
And yes I am getting triggered over sputnikmusic.com ratings

You can say that for every album.
