Unless I'm skipping an earlier release that's a better example of it, Clayman feels like the birth of modern melodeath that sorta follows a verse chorus verse format and almost sounds more like power metal with harsh vocals. Or at least the proto version of that style.
Edit: Slaughter of the Soul maybe?
Double edit: Maybe actually Hatebreeder by CoB is a better example of that

@Adolf: I don't think you're thinking of the right album... Soundtrack only had one single if I remember right, and that video isn't anything like that lol

That video makes my red white and blue turgid
@Source ya I think early CoB is probably more responsible for modern melodeath than Clayman is.

yeah Clayman's just a more emotionally substantial record I'm guessing (haven't actually jammed Hatebreeder, so can't tell how emotional it is)

Its just so confusing. Like theyre trying to go for an urban, almost hip hop type of music video. Theres women and motorcycles and graffiti and chain link fences, but then they have a shot of their drummer holding his toddler or whatever it was. Just a confusing video all around.

this is their most obvious sellout record to me in a sense that they're not trying at all. lyrics couldve been written by any 10 year old in 20 min and instrumental wise its the same thing they've been doing but on autopilot.

that's not the case with any other albums up until charms imo. i actually feel like battles and siren are definitely more creative outputs than this, even if overall worse

@Nazz I read a quote from alexi where he was like I'm fine with people calling our band everything except power metal. Which is funny since that's literally what they are lol

I mean idk I’d def consider COB more melodeath/thrash than power metal but the influence is def there.
