Actually, there is no bass in this album to give honor to Cliff Burton, who passed away while on tour before this album was recorded.
So basically what you mean is they said:
"Yeah, our great friend died so lets make our next album sound really shallow in honour of him"
I'd be more willing to think it was:
"Let's pull the piss with the New Guy by writing some really simple bass lines that follow the rhythm guitar to the letter for him then turn down the bass so it definitely can't be heard, just to pull the piss"

That was kinda lame indeed. Newsted deserved more respect, if only he had performed the vocals instead of Hetfield...
|
| |
Nah Hetfield's vocals were better for the songs on the albums, but the times when Newsted sang Seek & Destroy or Whiplash live were pretty win.

The last good Metallica album for 20 years. Anyway, Blackened and One are owning right now.

Creeping Jason begs to differ.

I've seen Jason singing parts of Creeping Death live and there is no doubt he was born to play metal. Listening to his bass work with Flotsam & Jetsam and Voivod really proves that he was held back in Metallica. Pity, with more of his input they could have put out some truly great albums throughout the 90's.

Yeah, his stage presence is rather impressive, and well, Ulrich and Hetfield were just lving in the past and couldn't let Burton's death go, consciously or subconsciously, which is bad, of course.

Seeing as the only song on this album that he has a songwriting credit on is Blackened, probably the best on the album save for Dyers Eve or One, it just shows how awesome they could have been with more Jason factored into their songwriting. As for his playing, just listening to their cover EP that they brought out after he joined the band and before they released Justice (those recordings are also on the Garage Inc album), he could play some badass lines pre-Black Album.

I just don't get what kind of an IDIOT would give this a 1. This deserves at least a 4. Like at LEAST. I only regret the lack of bass. I don't even think that it's Jason's fault. Jason is a decent bassist, but Lars and James dissed him a lot, and they were afraid of the unreplacing sound of Cliff's bass, which the metal community will never forget I believe. If this album would be re-editioned with a bass that you can actually hear, it would compete with at least Kill 'em All, if not even sweep it off it's feet. One's my favorite Metallica song of all time, and Blackened is my other favorite from this album. It rocks, everything from metallica does until after 1991. They were gods of metal from 1983.-1991.

Believe it or not, Metallica isn't everyone's cup of tea, not even their 80's stuff. I can very much understand why someone wouldn't like this album particularly

IMO, To Live Is To Die is the ultimate Metallica instrumental.
|
| |
I prefer Orion and Call of Ktulu, but only because I spent so long learning them on my guitar and bass. Haven't even attempted To Live Is To Die on either guitar or bass yet
