Yeah I liked all the singles to varying degrees. If you don't like the singles, you'll probably like less than half of this. If you like the singles you'll love the rest of it.

The horrible singles?? The only meh one (mainly cause it's butt rock and the lyrics) is Shoulders.

The Liars Club fits really well on the album and Comatose and Naianasha are incredible Coheed tunes.

I'd rank this one right in the middle of their discography. Better than Descension, TCBTS, and Vaxis I for sure. Probably above Year of the Black Rainbow too but the nostalgia of that one makes it tough to say.

"you are all filth and deserve those 128 shitty kbps"

I grew up with Kazaa, Limewire, PureVolume, and shitty YouTube to mp3 rips from 2007. Nothing can hurt me.

The title track of their new one is, no cap, their best song since Willing Well II.

Also, I agree with 100 percent of what LightandGlass said.

The singles feel much better heard within the album, if that makes sense. I wasn't too crazy about them either, but they're for sure not as intrusive as The Running Free on NWFT. I always have to skip that one lol. Also what Yazz said, that title track is huge! Old school Coheed fans are going to be very happy I think.

I feel like "old school" Coheed fans who want something off kilter and heavy will like Ladders of Supremacy more than the title track. The title track is wild and treading new ground for them. Has more in common with The Dear Hunter or the bombastic side of MCR than it does with The Willing Wells, IMO.

New album is very Dear Hunter-esque overall tbh

Yeah Ladders of Supremacy is classic GA1 Coheed. Regardless of how fans feel about the album overall, I can't imagine any older fans disliking that song.

One thing I realised after listening to Vaxis II and coming back to Vaxis I, it's made me appreciate the atmospheric feel of Vaxis I a lot more. It's the one thing I feel that Vaxis II misses the mark on, also the lack of interludes makes it feel a bit less "immersive" if that's the right analogy... Almost feels like an abridged version of what it should be?

Just an observation, I'm not bummed about the lack of them, it's just something I expect from a Coheed album these days and it's surprised me.

I guess I don't mind it so much since the first handful of albums didn't have too many interludes outside of a few small exceptions and the Willing Well suite. Ascension is the first one I can think of that went heavy on the interludes and since I don't care for Descension - Vaxis I, I haven't been overly exposed to the interludes.

I actually really like the length of Vaxis II and it doesn't overstay its welcome like Vaxis I does. Nearly all of the songs on this album are 5-6 minutes long and almost none of them earn those run times since they aren't overly dynamic throughout.

I agree regarding the song lengths, some of the songs on Vaxis I could do with a good trimming. I do feel that tracks like Black Sunday, Toys and All On Fire seem to possess an 'atmospheric presence' not found on Vaxis II. Again this is just an observation. Blood is the closest I've found to that Vaxis I 'feel' I guess. Both albums are so distinguishably different which I dig!

I'm largely okay with the songs on Vaxis I being so long and allowed the chance to breathe. It's the opening chapter in a new saga, so some sprawl is necessary and if someone is listening to this album, chances are they have already bought into the band's tendencies of indulgence lol

Haven't listened to Vaxis II yet, but always interesting hearing people talk about "old school" Coheed fans since that term seems, to me, to be a moving target. I feel like the band has more or less had the same sound since Good Apollo. Sometimes it gets proggier, sometimes it gets poppier, but for the most part it's remained steady in production style and general sound. The closest that I think they've come to appeasing old school fans was Ascension, which had a looooot of IKSE in its DNA.

That's why I love Ascension so much. It's basically IKSSE:3 Pt. II. I think the Coheed sound has been pretty drastically different on just about every album but I've also listened to the fuck out of all of them.

I think Good Apollo was clearly what they were working towards with the first three, and every album since has had a pretty unique identity, mostly to do with the turmoil surrounding the band. NWFT was the fallout of Josh and Mic, even though Mic came back and wrote/recorded on it, YOTBR was the first album to actually feature Chris Pennie and you can hear the burnout, Afterman sounds rejuvenated but is kind of all over the place, I think in due part to feeling out Zach and Josh (again). TCBTS was a curveball because Claudio decided he wanted to write a straightforward album, and Vaxis I seemed like an obvious course correction return to form to bring the fans back in. Other than the COVID landscape, it feels like this is the first time in a while there wasn't some big event or setback to come back from for a record.

This band really has had an absurd amount of drama and setbacks lol

I feel like the band accomplished what they originally set out to do on IKSSE3. They mostly dropped the punk/emo influences afterwards and Good Apollo vol. 1 was a pretty big departure in both sound and in concept. There's a pretty natural progression with those albums, showing out more of their Maiden/hard rock influences, but felt like the band really changed course after IKSSE3.

Yeah they almost completely dropped the post-hardcore and emo influences. I wonder how much they'd have stuck with the metal sound if Welcome Home wasn't such a huge hit.

Man, this new one is gonna be divisive as hell lol

On first blush, I love it. Feels like the first time in forever that they are actually forging ahead with a new sound. Not sure if it always hits the mark, but it feels like a shot in the arm creatively. Almost a complete antithesis of the safe-but-great Vaxis I. The title track is easily one of the best things they’ve ever done. After such a long wait, I’m really happy with how it turned out and it makes me extremely excited for the rest of the Vaxis saga. Really impressive for them to tread new ground this far into their career
