Because other than Light, all of the songs here are at least solid. Some are fantastic.

I'm gonna jam this again but if it doesn't grow I guess I'll go back to Artist and Vheissu which, along with Beggars, are the only records by Thrice that I thoroughly enjoy.

only us is so sick why couldn’t have they made an album of that instead of like whatever the hell the rest of this is

Yeah gonna go ahead and say this is the best thing they've done since Beggars
The only real downfalls are that one clunker of a song and the continued decline of Kensrue's lyrics
Otherwise this is like 40% Top-25 Thrice, 50% pretty tight, and 10% bad.

I am finally letting go of the expectation that Thrice will ever release something that really jives with me anymore. The Branch sounds to me like it is just Thrice trying to do a heavy song again for the sake of saying they can; but if it were on their older albums, we wouldn't think it was that good.
For me, the bigger problem has a lot to do with Dustin's lyrical simplicity and repetitiveness in his songs now coupled with the way he chooses to sing now tonally. You can tell Tom Waits is his fav musician by the way he chooses to sing. It's like Riley and Eddie still want to play heavy and aggressive songs (the bass is great on this album and the drums are super solid), but Teppei is too interested in playing keyboard than leader guitarwork, and Dustin is too interested in indie/folk music strumming outside of simple soft opening "riffs" to start a song. Outside of a very few riffs, that are really kind of just half baked, the guitar work is pitiful. And the "heavy" moments are made that way in the studio by applying layers of synth work and computers, not from the distortion of two guitars lighting up the tubes of their amps.
I don't know, maybe Thrice just isn't for me anymore. I've been sliding off them slowly ever since Beggars hoping each album, they'll come back around to some real aggression and anger that made their earlier stuff so inspiring and ear catching that it forced you to pay attention. These songs seem, for the most part, fairly forgettable.

I've actually been wanting them to ditch trying to be heavy (which they have at times with stuff like Death From Above) and settle into a more Alchemy Index-y pocket where you feel like they're trying things again.
I'm glad to hear that going on in this album, but I'm bummed that it only works about half of the time.

Same feeling here, I just think it works a lot more. Blood on Blood, especially, is something else.

One of my favorite Thrice albums, and that's no easy feat. Some brilliance musically, very diverse as well.
Blood on Blood, Just Breathe, and Beyond the Pines are my favorites.. Hold Up a Light is terrible but 9/10 are solid to fantastic.

yeah Blood on Blood is probably the best song on here for sure

I hope it grows on me. I mean i originally really disliked Beggars, granted that was in my core kid 'its selling out if its soft' phase, I eventually warmed up and grew to love it. Maybe this will be the same. One can hope
