Alright, reframe: this argument is fucking stupid, and peak Alice shits all over every single one of those bands. Hell, geriatric Alice shits on most of the bands you mentioned.
Endgame would’ve been a good point, but name me one album from Alice that’s as fucking godawful dogshit as Super Collider
I’ll wait.

"Alright, reframe: this argument is fucking stupid, and peak Alice shits all over every single one of those bands. Hell, geriatric Alice shits on most of the bands you mentioned." - They literally don't though. Most of those bands at their peak was better than peak Alice and every one at the same stage in their career were better than Alice at this stage of theirs. Case in point :
Peak Alice - Dirt. Peak Megadeth - Rust. Peak Cryptopsy - None So Vile. Peak Opeth - BWP. Peak Mayhem - DMDS
Alice - Rainier ( 18 years after debut). Same timeframes or longer - Megadeth - Endgame (better than Rainier), Dystopia (as good). Cryptopsy - Self titled (better than rainier). Opeth - Damnation (better than Rainier), Ghost Reveries (better), Heritage (better); Mayhem - Daemon.
"Endgame would’ve been a good point, but name me one album from Alice that’s as fucking godawful dogshit as Super Collider" - I completely agree with you, but Endgame, Thirteen and Dystopia are all better than this.

Man I liked Endgame when it was released but now I think it's pretty mediocre. The production especially is just godawful. Nowadays I appreciate Dystopia more, it's at least got some good jams and production

Honestly I think endgame is fine but after that there’s just nothing left in the tank.
And to be completely real they hadnt had a “good” record since Youthanasia

I'm gonna be *that person* and say that I found even Youthanasia and Countdown to be pretty flawed

"I'm gonna be *that person* and say that I found even Youthanasia and Countdown to be pretty flawed" - Countdown's second half was a little of a drop off, although 'Ashes In Your Mouth' remains a standout. Youthanasia I definitely can't agree on though, it's one of their strongest collection of songs.

I'm gonna be that person and say they've actually had 2 killers of albums and the rest of their discography is completely inconsistent throughout.
Countdown is great too but it's not fantastic

I just purchased both Round Hill Records re-releases of BGWTB and TDPDH on iTunes after realizing they got remastered and yes indeed it's very subtle and you might not tell the difference if you aren't an audiophile but the brickwalling is no longer there.

I’ll definitely have to check it out. The production here is definitely improved marginally I guess.
But man, two great records (one being my second favorite behind Dirt if I’m being honest) just completely fucked by bad production.
I’m not even gonna pretend that I know what makes “good” producing, but I do know enough to know when a record sounds bad.
And man, those two just aint it man.

"I’m not even gonna pretend that I know what makes “good” producing, but I do know enough to know when a record sounds bad."
Right, and it has to do with the loudness war issue. I'd say if you enjoy listening full albums and maybe play a note or two then you may notice brickwalling (meaning volume pushed to its max across all channels/instruments) because there is a very clear loss of dynamics.
The band sold their Capitol Records and Virgin Records catalog to Round Hill Records and man they did a fine job remastering these two albums (very, very subtly tho) where you can actually listen to these songs without getting a headache. I could actually follow all guitar parts on the TDPDH title track and "Lab Monkey", it was pretty neat.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on the subject.

Hearing you mention Lab Monkey makes me literally wanna check out the remaster right now. Most underrated post layne track imo. I fucking love that song

Tbh (and being someone whose never tried post lane aic) if I was at a record store and they had a newer aic alongside cc/opeth/mayhem for like 20 bux each, aic would be the lowest priority.
Now if we're talking budget 5 dollar CD bargains. then I'd probably lean more towards newer megadeth/cryptopsy but would also be more likely to pick up something like rainer fog just out of curiosity. All of those I wouldn't have much reference on, haven't heard mega since 13 and crypt since unspoken king. I'm lazy.. I would pick up new aic over new pearl jam tho
Also feel like dirt was well produced but has a dated mix

You’re missing out.
Black Gives Way to Blue is legit my favorite Alice album behind Dirt.
Dinosaurs and Rainer Fog are good too but that first reunion record is incredible.

BGWtB is special, but to hear it non-brickwalled would be even more special I suppose
need a sauce on that remaster baby, can't find it on Apple music and I wouldn't buy it anyway

blacks one i'd probably pick up out them all, mainly cause i had friends that were into AiC back in 2009 that said it was amazing, buuut i hadn't gotten into the band yet so never really gave it a proper shot. seen a few live videos of them on youtube over the years and seem like theyve got it together
