Big Takeover is indeed a Bad Brains song. And, I concur. It's brilliant.

completely agree about elliott's music giving hope, listening to him is like an old friend
reassuring you that everything is going to be ok (despite the tragically violent way things ended
for him)

i totally understand what you mean about frusciante's early work but i don't necessarily feel the
same thing as you from this album (definitely do from certain songs on smile though)

this album, once i got used to it, just feels like a surreal playground of weird and cool vibes but
i don't feel anything dark or sinister in these songs... just a man who's starting to lose his way
in the world

perhaps it's having the knowledge that he 'found his way' out of his drug hell and went on to really
prosper in music that softens the rough edges for me... either way his story has been very inspiring
to me in times of woe

this is all stream of consciousness babble so apologies if i'm not making sense

@peaks - pretty much the same, change is definitely beginning though man, within

@reichy - yeah i totally get you man and i feel that same way about smile... it may interest you to know that the first half of this was recorded during BSSM, before he even tried heroin

it definitely does seem like two completely different people though, the transition from the first two albums to the overwhelming feeling of rebirth and hope on 'to record only water' and ' from the sounds inside' is not really a transition at all, more of a transformation

well i mean he prob tried it or w/e but he's said in interviews many times that he made a conscious and deliberate decision to become a junkie after he quit the band... pretty sure most of the second half (untitleds) he was high, as well as that fuckin ripping solo on ten to butter blood voodoo

can't find a source right now but i definitely remember reading a quote (paraphrasing here) 'niandra wasn't recorded while i was a heroin addict, it was released while i was a heroin addict'

whatever fuckin happened i'm just so grateful he didn't die, every single album of his is extremely important to me

hmm i'd be hesitant to believe wikipedia when the man himself has said the opposite again and again... it's not like he is ashamed of his past or anything, like he openly admits smile was released for drug money, though he believes the material to be of high quality (lol)... but yeah who really knows

the key words there though - sober? maybe... sane? prob not

my understanding is he had no intention of even releasing this, he would just play it for his friends and they urged him to release it or something

i mean there is so much music that would be more 'disturbing' to the average person than this (ie black metal or w/e) but then again that is a deliberate aesthetic decision and this is the the aural embodiment of a man's mental disintegration and descent into addiction

not sure where i'm going with this i just find this man and his music endlessly fascinating
