on the positive side, instrumentally this doesn't feel like that much of a regression

Love Is Dead is currently sitting at 73 on Metacritic. It's gotten some good commercial reviews, and a fair few mixed ones. Of the mixed reviews, most love some songs, and are underwhelmed by others - but they contradict each other; for example, some say Miracle is the best song, others that it is the worst. There isn't one song that isn't lauded by at least one review, (although the only two universally praised songs seem to be Graffiti and Graves). Anyway, the point I'm making is that each of the 13 tracks has some fans - there is no consensus that a particular song is shit. I guess I'm lucky that I really like about 8 or 9 of them. I'm cearly in the minority with that view here though.

^Miracle is one of the reasons I’ve rated this as low as I have, but outside of the singles it’s pretty good. But I will undoubtably say this is nowhere near as bad as the consensus is saying. It’s got a good number of great tracks here. Weakest CHVRCHES album, but considering how great they’ve been that’s not necessarily a bad statement by any means. I bop to a good amount of what’s here.

The sput consensus is saying 2.7, if anything is exaggerated its the perceived backlash.

I'd rather go to actual church then listen to this Chvrches album again...

Lucid, let's be real, by Sput standards a 2.7 average is pretty damn awful, even though I only have this at a 3 myself (though I'd prob give it a 3.2 if I had those privileges) I still feel this should be more in the 3.3-3.4 average range considering the averages of the previous albums; relative to the last album that's a drop of 0.8 and 1.0 from the debut, which I don't think it quite deserves. Plus, it seems that even people who are in the (supposedly) neutral 2.5-3 range are only talking about why this is worse than previous work and not taking the work at face value. I'm not saying this is a masterpiece or anything, it's certainly a flawed work, it just seems people are ganging up on it a bit unfairly. Just my two cents though, everyone's entitled to his opinion.

If I was rating this based on entertainment value and ease of listening it would get a 3.5. I get the issue here: most people find this somewhat enjoyable even though it's blatantly not a "great" album, so you end up with a poor average. I agree that the reaction doesn't match what you expect from a 2.7 site average, but Chvrches are to blame for that!

Miracle sounds like the kind of song Imagine Dragons would make. Get Out, Miracle and Never Say Die sounds pretty samey, like, I'm pretty sure they could've toned down the handclaps instead of abusing them.

Like I said in my review, its a sonically boring album. It regresses CHVRCHES 10 years and makes them white noise. Even in the pop landscape, this album won't do them any good.

yeah those singles shares the same structures and compositions with how the verse tries to be uplifting then builds unto "larger than life" chorus complete with thunderous, thumping mid tempo drums and millennial whoop.

Love is Dead sounds like a B-side than anything else. It insults fans intelligence by taking a band, famous for complex statements and unwavering beliefs, and having them write a breakup record. How do they expect this to have credibility?

I just wanted to read user reactions so far. Mine is a bit harsh, but that's only because of how disappointing this album was.

One thing you got really wrong with the review is when you say it gets worse after My Enemy. Miracle is uncomfortably awful but My Enemy is an etienne sin caliber embarrassment

Chvrches radio on Spotify used to be synth pop centric and now it’s shitty indie pop. Just sayin

Apparently readers think I'm "too harsh." I don't see how people find this album enjoyable. I'm not the biggest pop fanatic, but CHVRCHES doesn't have to dial back in order to be pop. Pop listeners don't care as long as they can twerk to it.

You are absolutely not too harsh. The exuberance is scrubbed clean from this record and the remainder is some bland pop music devoid of anything unique or defining. It’s almost like ‘Love is Dead’ is a bad premise for a band whose cornerstone is songs that are whimsical and danceable
