And they sound like who?? I’ve tried hundreds , yes I said hundreds of bands in this genre, and they are in the 1%. They stand out. Again, the production is terrific. Clarity, spacious, audible...something diff with this brand of music.

I mean, seeing that this is the token blackgaze album of this year, I really wanted to like this. I'd rather not be the contrarian but the acclaim this is getting is a little bloated if anything, but this isn't anything really special going on here imo. This is also coming from someone that has listened to 'hundreds' of bands in this genre. I'm not trying to persuade anyone in my opinion because I know I'm in the minority here and that's fine

it just occurred to me that this is probably filling the void for some people after deafheaven took an L this year, because this is definitely reminiscent of their take on the genre

That’s the problem with this genre, you said that bands name. That’s why I can have a much broader and open spectrum for other post black metal acts, I refuse to compare any of them to that mediocre band. It’s really a shame.

I mean it’s not special but it still rules.

Actually guys, the new Mountaineer album is better than this...more gazey but still crunchy.

ye what hawks said. This isn't stylistically special unless you consider using more simplistic (chorus-y) song structures "interesting" for black metal given most atmos and gazey bands don't use typical structuring in the first place. In that way it's kiiiiinda different, if only in that weird way. But black metal in general isn't very diverse and loads of bands get accolades for being "good" while still being fairly generic, so I don't find any problem with this generic pbm getting good reviews.

@zaruyache: a lot of bands sound the same yeah which is why you gotta love/hate bands like altar of plagues, thantifaxath, castevet, krallice, botanist, deathspell omega etc for doing it differently. They're all pretty atmospheric to me but I suppose that term can be used broadly.

This album is pretty good but hardly revolutionary. Doesn't have to be either as you and hawks seem to agree upon.
