I would just change my name to Lucca but that's too straight forward, plus DarkSideOfLucca has been my email/sputnik name since like 08 or 09 so I will stand my ground goddamnit!

So after just over a week with the album I have to say it's a grower for me. I already quite liked about half of it but now for me there really are just two or three songs I'd skip (Bastards, California bleeding and Razorblade smile), got to say that the chorus on California bleeding is just too cheesy, the other two aren't as bad especially Bastards but it's a bit out of place here.
Definite highlights are the title track, screaming at the sun, Behind a mask, Triple beam(!!!) and Heavy lies the crown.
The most embarrassing thing about the album is the OTT negative reaction it has received, this is better than the last two albums and shows a band clearly not being 'lazy' contrary to what has been suggested and imo they sound rejuvenated.
I'll admit that at first it seems a bit all over the place, but the variety all begins to gel and make sense when you listen the album as a whole several times, with MH displaying the versatility which is undeniably one of their main strengths.

^Yes, that's my opinion. Currently. Although I'd say favourite MH albums remain the first three (old school MH fan).

Each to their own of course, I know few will agree with my tastes!
As much as I admire the musicianship of The Blackening and (to a lesser extent) Unto the Locust I just didn't connect with those two like I did with the albums up to Through the Ashes. B & D was hit and miss, more than this one imo, still decent though.
I dig all the albums though as these guys are probably my fave band (so maybe a 3.5 is a more realistic assessment of Catharsis!) the current 2 average is just far too low to be any where near realistic, in my opinion many people are just clicking 1-2 after hearing Bastards or reading about Flynn's political stance.

Agreed with like everything you said (even down to your song choices) but in no world is this album better than the last two

They always had political songs and people didn't shit on them so much...Maybe it's because the music is shitty this time or maybe because the lyrics are terrible (not their message but the way they're written)

Yeah I dunno man, I fucking love The Blackening and Locust (and their first two albums) but this album can still suck my balls
