@Groundking Interesting. I've always reserved the illusive "5" for albums that I literally wouldn't change a thing about. There are a lot of 4.5's that I love to death, but there is just one thing I wish they would have done differently that holds it back. I may even love them as much as my 5's, but I am aware of something that leaves me wanting more.
Case and point: No World for Tomorrow by Coheed and Cambria. Love the hell out of that album but I don't care for "Radio Bye Bye". Therefore, it's a 4.5. But to each his or her own. Good to hear another person's system!

Hard to come by 5s now a days. I take the classic thing very literally. Never 5'ed an album right off the hop. Generally started as a 4-4.5, then moved up.

As it should be. 5 is the result of the test of time.
|

That's great and all but you should 5 every Meshuggah album before you hear it

@hopelust and dewinged 100% agree with you.

I mean, ratings fluctuate wildly for me. Smtimes I get a really good first impression, maybe because of that day's mood and stamp a 4.5 to the thing, and smtimes it starts with a 3 and goes up.
What is set is that a 2.5 or less rarely goes up.

I tend to aim low and then go high. That way, if something falls off, I don't have to go down haha.

Is this better than Language?

Hi lurker. Way to get that 1st comment.
This is totally better than language. Language had great ideas but was so scattered in its execution. This is focused, and while it possesses very little of the riffage you'd come to expect from the contortionist, it definitely brings their more melodic and emotive qualities to the forefront. Listen to it from front to back and enjoy the ride.
Loving the back end of the album lately. Relapse, Return to Earth and Monochrome (pensive) are such a killer 1-2-3.

Godspeed and Reimagined are actually pretty decent but the rest is awfully boring

Wanky shit like btbam and periphery mostly annoy me like crazy these days; this is my kind of modern prog metal, even tho it’s not amazing or anything. It’s nice that the most popular bands have plenty of different approaches and change things up a fair amount.

I wonder how this one will survive the test of time. I was in bliss when I looped it the first 10 times, but then I haven't listened to anything from it since. I think it oversaturated by rotation. Haven't even given the vinyl a spin on my good speakers yet. It's got a 2-3 10/10 tracks surrounded by some very plain songs that don't let the thing flow very well. But Godspeed, The Center, and Relapse keep me from getting bored of it. I just wish the closing track had more oomph. Something that was powerful, like The Parable. It's overlong and unfocused and it doesn't end on a bittersweet crescendo like the aforementioned closer did. It tries, but just meanders into instrumentals and then ends. A shame.

Band had their best songs on Exoplanet.
Friendly reminder that wank is the worst musical descriptor 9/10 times
