I don't think you can call anybody weak if you are listening to this. Ya'll the type of dudes to build a tree house then tear up in it

to be real though. I never understood why people find Nick Drake and Elliott Smith sad. To me they both just write beautiful folk/folk rock music

i can get that with nick drake, while some of it is certainly melancholic its not particularly sad or depressing
but elliot smith seems undeniably sad to me.

I mean some of the content of the lyrics might be depressing when it comes to Elliott Smith. He's not milking it though and the music itself isn't trying to be tear jerky either. Someone like Sufjan Stevens goes way more into that direction. I don't think Elliott Smith ever wrote anything as sad as Casimir Pulaski Day for example
|
| |
Elliott Smith’s sadness is way more inward than Sufjan’s. But that’s sadness: even if we hadn’t invented god, someone would have made that Royal Tenenbaums scene

hmm I can see that. Personally Sufjan's flavour of sadness is the one I connect more with. Though I can understand that it might be the other way around for other people
