i can get that with nick drake, while some of it is certainly melancholic its not particularly sad or depressing



but elliot smith seems undeniably sad to me.

I mean some of the content of the lyrics might be depressing when it comes to Elliott Smith. He's not milking it though and the music itself isn't trying to be tear jerky either. Someone like Sufjan Stevens goes way more into that direction. I don't think Elliott Smith ever wrote anything as sad as Casimir Pulaski Day for example
