I'd say it's better than average, but not by much. There's a few great moments but they're in-between the stuff that's just flat out boring. Feet Don't Fail Me gets me so pumped at the beginning.

"the drums sound pathetic"
this so hard. that fucking snare omg

Drums have never been a highlight of the band except for the extremely short Grohl stint.

Good review but disagree hard.

I think the shotgun spread of opinions on this album is pretty interesting

It's not that spread, it just happens to be in this thread. Most people love it.

I thought I would have a radical and awkward listen after reading some comments about the singles and the leaked version. Unlike almost everybody, I liked and still like The Way You Used to Do. I only listened this twice, maybe it will improve with subsequent listens, but for now I'm between a 3 and a 3.5 for this one. Other highlights in my opinion are Domesticated Animals, Head Like a Haunted House, Un-Reborn Again and The Evil Has Landed.
Good review.

Josh sounds so good on here, his voice ages like a fine wine.

Great review! I've only heard the singles, but I suspect I will feel much the same way as you on this one.

also, Josh's voice is aging like a tinny hysterical woman, agreed..

This is by far and away their worst album, though I'm not really surprised as I saw LC as the real start of a downward spiral even though people seemed to love that album. At least it didn't sound like a band that was trying to produce radio hits in one of the worst eras of mainstream music.
And don't even get me started on the production and mastering of this album...just horrific, and while that's always been a negative for QotSA it sounds especially neutered here.
The one good thing is that "The Way You Used To Do" is the worst song on the album, because it's straight up garbage. "Fortress" is pretty good, though it doesn't really sound like a Queens song and Homme's vocals sound a bit...terrible at times.
I wish they would get rawer and heavier, but I feel that any chance of that happening is nil at this point.

Oh, and the lyrics on this album are terrible in general.
|

I miss when Josh taught you something in the lyrics, like the numbers in regular John: One six two seven eight Two six three seven eight nine
|
| |
Definitely more a 3 or 3.5.

Funny that nobody critcize Mark Ronson.

Nah lyrics are absolutely fine. So is the album for that matter. It's a grower.

The Evil Has Landed, Villains of Circumstance and Feet Don't Fail Me Now are killer tracks. Fortress and Domesticated Animals are close to them.
