Still amazing to me that this has so many 5s. This album does nothing for me. Has no spark, no fire, half the songs are the musical equivalent of Ambien (Lit Me Up, Batter Up especially).

Hmm interesting take. There's definitely Deja vibes but I feel like this is more sinister and less upbeat. Maybe it all comes down to what you consider mellow. I do suppose this is slower across the board.
This album is not nearly as angry or abrasive as the albums that came after Deja Entendu. This album, to me, falls right in line with songs like "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't", "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows", "The Boy That Blocked His Own Shot"... basically almost the entire Deja Entendu album after the first three tracks. Science Fiction has that subdued catchiness that was missing after Entendu, and is much less noisy and angry. Science Fiction definitely lacks the tempo variations, which makes it a little more depressing but overall I feel it kind of fits right in with Deja Entendu's vibe, sound, and overall accessibility.

All very fair points. I'm glad you enjoy it either way!

This album defines the fragmented pieces of Brand New's entire discography, including the demo tracks off Fight Off Your Demons (the unrefined guitar/vocal work, most notably).
At the end of "In the Water" when i first heard the repeated sample that was in "Daisy," 'And we sing this morning that wonderful and grand ol' message, and I don't know about you but I never get tired of it,' I had chills running down my spine.
I think of this album more of an anthology of sorts (even Your Favorite Weapon moments, like "The No Seatbelt Song"), and even though they are all new songs, I get an overwhelming sense of nostalgia.
Oh, and that bass line in "Lit Me Up"...
