Great review! To me, the album is like if "Paradise" and "Honeymoon" had some really passionate biblical relations and had a child. And the child grew up listening to Leonard Cohen and '60s folk.
I do disagree with the assertion of "more of the same" because one thing to point out is that up until now Lana's catalog has been focused on the world of her and another man. This record is more of a turning point because she's looking up from her man and making poignant commentary on the world she's living in outside of herself.

This probably could use a short and direct negative review, but then that would mean me listening to this again... I'll def think about it tho, thanks for the idea Ars

it makes me sad so many users are so mired in their dislike for poor lizzy grant that they can't get over themselves and enjoy this fun pretty album

I love Lana's first two albums and Paradise EP man... This direction just fits her style very poorly imo

i wish this stopped at track 10, 73 minutes is way too long for this sound and mood. she's remembered how to write catchy hooks again after the snoozefest that was honeymoon, but her entire gimmick is just producing diminishing returns at this point.

If we have the power to remove songs we don't like from an album, is it still a relevant complaint?
My version of Lust for Life has 6 songs and it's pretty great.

It's still a complaint but shouldn't account for more than about a .5 drop in rating
Glass should be half full with music, if you love 6 songs out of 12 that should be enough for a 3.5+ Rating
|
| |
But what if you detest the other 6 out of 12?
And yeah Egarran, of course it's still a relevant complaint! Albums are still released an marketed as complete works and should obviously be judged as such.

^ see, this is why ratings are completely arbitrary. You could utterly adore 2 songs and think the rest is kind of meh, so maybe like a 2.5, but then you could also think they're all just kind of okay and also a 2.5. I have albums at 4 that contain like 3-4 of my favorite songs of all time but the rest is just good, and others where the whole album is pretty solid but nothing spectacular and still a 4.

'But what if you detest the other 6?'
Unlikely it'll be that extreme but half the material on an album being excellent is way more important than half an album being bad. All my ratings are weighted towards how much great material there is than how much bad.
Some of my 5s have the occasional average or poor song on them, makes zero impact.
Yes that does say very bad things about what I rate under a 2.5.

"if you love"
That word is too strong. I guess I 'loved' a couple of tracks on Ultraviolent, but it isn't a word I would use for her songs.
Boney K, I hear you, but albums are not as complete works of art as they used to be imo.
In Lana's case, I would rather have a lot of songs I could pick from, than a tight 30 minutes feat. a$ap rocky.

For me I'd honestly say the best way I find to rate an album is to judge it on the strongest 2/3 of runtime.
No album is perfect, if I rated on average track ratings I'd be the stingiest cvnt this side of scaruffi
Maybe one album would get a 4.5.
That would be dumb.
