Last year is a little too minimal for me. Nothing bad about it per se, just slow and too long for what it is
|
| |
I also think Last Year is just kinda boring
Pleader and House of the Rising Sun tho, damn

With an orchestral arrangement behind them (a la Cold Blood), Alt-J could make a fantastic Bond song.

Lucid's definitely right here. The only thing keeping Alt-J alive is Newman's voice and some crisp production, and the production isn't interesting at all except on Snare, which has the most pointless coda of all time. Almost every song on here takes decent hooks/riffs and drudges them on for too long with no actual development (crescendo + adding one stem that fills out the sound but doesn't complicate the track musically doesn't count). Then you have the mess of a closer which juxtaposes a really beautiful melodic refrain with spacey, dark dissonant ambiance with seemingly no connection between the two sections. It's like they wrote the refrain and were too afraid or lazy to stretch that idea to a complete track. The compositional laziness only gets more apparent with every listen. There's not an original idea here, and as for old ideas, there are too few to rationalize the runtime by any measure. The blues-rock on Snare though is pretty interesting if amateurish.

Snare is the most interesting track... right.
Im with you that compositionally this is a mess, but 3ww brings a hell of a lot more interesting and infinitely less annoying ideas to the table than snare

the first two tracks are the best but it's pretty much just taking ideas that alt-j already employed on old records and fleshing them out into overlong pop songs. snare definitely has the most sonic heft to it. it's not better than either 3ww or in cold blood but at least it pricked up my ears a bit

Dudes, some of you overthink music so much. This album made me feel many different things and I liked it. It went in my ears, I liked the sounds and I plan to listen again!
Although I do feel that while Snare was wrong on so many levels as an Alt-J and a song on this record, if it was a song by an artist I'd never heard before I would seek out that band because it was fun.

lol
on the other hand, if you're going to devote any amount of time specifically to music, you might as well think about it a bit
|

it's not thinking, it's recognizing what you're feeling imo
