I mean I was kidding right there but no your statement was very wrong.

Seeet review. Though I'm not sure what about the album made it seem like it's longing to be a masterpiece. Seems like he had quite the opposite intention to me

Love FJM, but on my first listen I can't help but think he squandered a great opportunity to diversify and expand his sound, instead he doubled down on one strength of his, and while I like most of the songs, it's a draining album with very little scene changes.

ngl I prefer this over "Honeybear whatever" and Leaving LA feels like a never ending disney ballad

I listened to this during my hour drive to work and still didn't finish it. First impressions were that the first few songs were very strong, it lulled badly, then started to get interesting again towards the middle - latter portion. The lyrics were incredible at spots and bad at others. Literally no idea what to think of this right now other than it's super long and homogenous. Hopefully with more listens the songs start to diversify and the lyrics start to resonate. We'll see.

Some nice instrumental touches here and there, but man this is just one long track, isn't it?

That's what I was thinking. It's pretty similar from beginning to end.

I listened last night. My first impressions were similar to what Sowing expressed above. It's a lot to take in, but I enjoyed it overall. It's definitely a flawed record though and a step down from Honeybear but not as bad as some people are saying it is. The general critical reception is definitely hyperbolic though - my opinion will probably end up somewhere between the public and critical opinion.
"Leaving LA" I liked at first but by the end it started to wear on me - for now I'll keep listening to it but in the future I see myself skipping that song.

a step down from Honeybear, agreed
edit: I ended up liking Leaving LA. I think it's a good litmus test for how someone will feel about the album overall.

Irony and sarcasm are all great and stuff, but dude simply is not funny. Wether this unfunny-ness is intentional or not, he just can't sell this character at all to me.
Lyrics are awful most of the time, with some (seemingly) sincere lines spread here and there.
I think I like this more than HB, in spite of it all.

Not supposed to be funny. Sarcastic, but not funny.

I don't know about that FlagAsh, Honeybear and Fear Fun are both very funny imo. On first pass this one seemed a bit less so though, the tone is definitely a but more serous this time around.

I'm well versed in funny and this is not it.

I don't think he's trying to be funny on this one. I agree with FlagAsh.

I do look forward to digging into this more - to me, it seemed the weakness of the album is more in its being bloated and a bit too one-toned (though people are exaggerating how one-toned it is, i think) than it being inconsistent on a song-for-song basis, which means that revisiting individual tracks should be enjoyable.

This was a grower for me. The first time I listened to it I thought no one will ever need sleeping pills again--but that changed. I listened to the songs separately until I got to know them, and when I re-listened to them all-together it sounded great.
