"they started doing more melodic vocal work on Deliver Us. that's what happened."

I'd say they started doing that with Undoing Ruin. It's not just Convalescence that's melodic.

I think some of the stuff on Undoing Ruin is actually a bit cheesy (like Sound the Surrender) but there's some killer tracks on there too (Convalescence, District Divided, These Fevered Times)

Undoing Ruin is very melodic. Deliver Us had way more stand out lead work though.

"I think some of the stuff on Undoing Ruin is actually a bit cheesy (like Sound the Surrender)"

You take that back.

Sound the Surrender probably is my least favorite song on Undoing Ruin

There is a certain "heroic" atmosphere to that song that feels cheesy to me. It sticks out because most of the stuff these guys do sounds very genuine.

the opening/verse riff on that song is really unremarkable. the rest of it is pretty good though.

Haha dude you nailed it. I kinda get this vibe with a lot of their songs and that's what turned me off them for the longest time back in the day.

Yeah triumphant is what I always called that song, but I do love those leads.

On the other hand Hidden Hands has none of that cheesiness. Even when it sounds epic it just sounds epic and not trying-to-be-epic. It all feels very genuine and organic

Sadist Nation is so fucking good but Undoing Ruin feels like a victory lap version of Sadist Nation that doesn't rest on its laurels.

Wasn't a huge fan of Sadist Nation last time I listened to it (which was a while ago). I found it to be a pretty hectic mess.

As long as it's acknowledged as their best work in 10 years that's fine by me.
