What's it about the Jam?
They're not ones I spin regularly but I loved 'em about 20yrs ago. They were my mates fave band when there was that whole mod/60s/70s revival thing.
They've done some all time classic tunes.

I dislike Weller's voice, some of their songs are decent though

Respectively disagree with the review, and for someone who saw both Springsteen and Ryan Adams this summer I think the comparison can be forced at times. And ironically enough, I think this is quite on the contrary one of his more individualistic records compared to his other material.
"this dude is a hack"
Yea not true, guy is talented as hell. And while I agree that you could definitely find the music on here derivative, it's hardly incompetent and soulless.

No matter how amazing Nebraska is I don't think I'll ever get Springsteen.

JWT - I agree he's not incompetent, I do find him quite soulless and his music unmemorable though
Zak I don't get the Springsteen thing totally either

A lot of the lyrics form this are pretty personal for him, I'd hardly call Shiver & Shake and To Be Without You soulless, especially after his divorce.

The fact they come across soulless despite the lyrics I find even more damning speaking personally, but if this brings the feels for other people I can see that would be possible, just didn't happen for me, not even close

I guess we can agree to disagree.

I mean me being moved by this would be the equivalent to me being brought to uncontrollable tears by the performance of an Elvis impersonator...I'm not saying it's impossible just highly improbable

Yeah, of course we can disagree to disagree, you're in the majority in your opinion of this and I respect everyone else's opinions in liking this too. I will never claim my opinion is objective regarding music, it's merely my take on it
The most impressive counter to this review would be a positive review and I'm hoping someone on the site pens one.

I don't think many of the tunes on here will ever be iconic, but to me this is a solid fun rock record from front to back. I'm definitely entertaining the idea of writing a review for this.

how do you create your own reviews?

Go to your profile page, on the left hand side under "Quick Links" you'll see an option to submit a review. From there you can pick the artist, album, rating, box to input text and recommend other similar records. I highly recommend writing your review in a Word document, and copying and pasting it into the submit review page, that way you save it, edit and be able to read it beforehand just fine.

On my latest listen, with Springsteen on my mind, I'm definitely hearing more direct influence for sure. But I stand by my opinion that the connection isn't THAT close. If we're comparing to 80s rock artists, Tom Petty seems the much clearer choice. Outbound Train, though, is extremely Springsteenish, I'll give you that.

I think the influence of Springsteen and Petty is clear but what I disagree with is that this is mimicry - the songwriting itself is totally normal for Adams, he didn't sit down and think "I'm going to write a Bruce Springsteen album".

I agree with that assessment. I was trying to clarify and update my feelings on it, since my last comment a page or two ago may have been overstating the differences compared to what I intended to.

I definitely agree with you guys as well. It seems that some think "Oh golly gee, there's a harmonica, acoustic guitars and keyboard littered throughout this along with some mid tempo electric guitar with some old school rock and americana vibes, he's trying to be Bruc Springsteen" which I think is just silly, he's been around the block for over two decades, his sound on this album may not be unique but it's definitely the sound he's been kicking around now for his second album straight and the songs from his last record kill live.

I will say though that the self titled did this sound a bit better and I'm unlikely to go to this album over that in the future, for now though this is a solid jam, not rocking my world but it's enjoyable.

I never got around to jamming the self-titled. I should get around to that, this isn't mind-blowing but I do like it and will probably listen to it quite a bit.

The self titled has two particularly amazing songs that make the whole album a bit more memorable whereas this one is missing that, however it could be the sort of thing where between the two you prefer whichever you hear first.
