you can think that but TPAB is more influential and overall important to the scene of hip-hop imo
|
| |
the album hasn't even been around for two years, we're still a long ways away from seeing if TPAB will have any influence or importance to hip hop in the long run.
|
| |
at best, i indirectly blame K-dot's song 'U' for influencing the new j. cole record's aesthetic.

it's pretty clear that it will cement itself as one of the best rap albums of this decade

TPAB has already been influencing a lot of the beats of other rappers. Logic ( but that should be no surprise since it's Logic ) and J. Cole both had very jazzy albums come out post-TPAB. listen to any bandcamp rapper and chances are (if theyre not trap rap or some shit goth-bs) they're using jazzy beats.

"we're still a long ways away from seeing if TPAB will have any influence or importance to hip hop in the long run."
Seems like a lot of mainstream guys are already going for that jazzy production, something they weren't doing before TPAB, and even 4 Your Eyez Only seems to be directly influenced by TPAB to some degree

Logic is a bandwagoner and wouldve made his album sound like K-Dot regardless of what he madea, nd like I already name called J. Cole. I'd like to see the influence spread further than artists imitating sounds.

that made no sense lol

hmmm, hard to explain, but id say it comes from artists who really want to take the sound created by another artist and make it their own? the problem with people like j cole or logic or bandcamp rappers is that theyre using it as a gimmick because its popular and dont really give a shit about what theyre doing - which is reflective in their overall message or writing in general - but artists who are really influenced know how to infuse it into their work or how to expand what their inspirations set out to do.
To use another example from another genre, its why people like Steven Wilson don't do anything for me, he's just too comfortable imitating the same beats and cliches of prog rock instead of doing anything new or interesting with it - as opposed to early porcupine tree material or even motorpsycho - who seem to really want to make the genre something new and fresh.
Its pretty subjective I guess, and maybe its more of a feeling than objective execution for me, but I just havent seen anyone actually do anything that could be a "inspired by k-dot" project as opposed to "well k-dots pretty popular so I might as well do it, too"

influence has to keep spreading for it to make an impact, from artist to artist. kendrick --> logic --> next artist

i dont think he meant future the rapper, unless he did

idk using future is odd tho might wanna take someone more in Kendrick's lane but then again if Kendrick really had that big of an impact maybe future would've changed his sound too but he making mad dough so
