Never thought I'd see the day I'd say this...Mojo have a pretty tight top 5 AOTY in 2016
Mojo
1.Blackstar by David Bowie
2.Love & Hate by Michael Kiwanuka
3.Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4.FLOTUS by Lambchop
5.You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
NME's as always is absolute horsepoop

That looks solid yeah. Still haven't heard Bowie and Cohen, will be checking those in the next couple weeks.
Rolling Stone's list is absolute shit as usual. Consequence of Sound's is solid. However the mainstream zine's lists always pander a bit too much to the obvious ones. American Songwriter's list is usually great, I'll be on the lookout for that one.

Bit disappointed Uncut didn't put FLOTUS in their top 10 ahead of their bottom three (Anohni, Teenage Fanclub, Beyoncé).
Thought they had these boys backs

Sturgill did make the Uncut list Boney, I'd have thought that magazine would be closest to your taste
I didn't like Consequence's choices really - other than Bowie, Cave and Cohen

I tend to ignore the rankings when looking at these lists so when you consider it that way CoS at least had this in it for example.

Just looked at that Uncut list, it's great!

Ah yeah, I was just assessing their top 10s only.
Uncut has this in their overall list too, was just hoping this would crash a few top 5's.

The thing with Uncut is generally they'll have their feature review for the month as Americana/country and/or sometimes even comebacks of bands like American Music Club that you'd have presumed were largely forgotten.
My favorite of the mainstream mags.

I haven't paid them much attention, I'll have to start doing so.

Another list to look out for is Paste, they usually have some good Americana picks.

Paste are quite diverse which is what I like about them, seem to give unfashionable genres equal respect

I'm starting to freak out now because now that these lists are coming out I've started creating a list of things to check before I make my list and it's getting pretty long, I'm gonna have to check like an album a day to get through them all before I put my list up which isn't much for a lot of people but it's a lot for me.

I'm only seeing 10 or so albums I really need to check on top of what I've already listened to, but then there are a lot of albums I need to revisit considering they're getting mentioned a fair bit and I dismissed them (Riley Walker, Hiss Golden Messenger, James Blake, Iggy Pop, etc)

I usually try to pick a few relatively obscure ones that I hadn't heard of before from these lists, even if they're not ranked particularly high, plus there were already a few big ones I was missing.
I never checked that Riley Walker, is it worth adding to my list. Also I revisited Hiss Golden recently and it grew on me a bit.

I love primrose green, absolutely love it but I haven't heard his new one. I'm far too busy listening to wanky jazz. Should you be so inclined I highly recommend Shabaka and the Ancestors - Wisdom of Elders

Bit surprised you haven't got into the new Ryley and King Creosote albums Zak

That new Ryley Walker is great. I blew it off at first because it wasn't Primrose Green Pt. 2, but the joke was on me because the bonus track (a 45 minute live version of "Sullen Mind") basically is Primrose Green Pt. 2--but the whole thing is good once I listened to it for what it was instead of what I wanted it to be.
