Well, at least I can hardly agree with you on the fact that Passer's intro is pretty dope

for anyone who hasn't heard them, here are 3 of the 4 bonus tracks for this
Wide Awake in Quietus (iTunes bonus track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJDEvBR2ZHY
Vakaren (digibook bonus track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQJVBtaiN6M
Sistere (vinyl bonus track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkSk2rrUklY
the remaining Japanese bonus track is actually a cover of the Judas Priest song Night Comes Down. nobody's uploaded that yet, though.

I found the bonus tracks kind of boring, glad they did not include them. Sistere is the only one that I found interesting

tbh Vakaren is one of my favorite tracks from the whole album. it's like Unfurl and Departer had a baby

I get what he's saying though. This album requires some pretty heavy digestion IMO. I find it very unlikely someone could rate this a classic after hearing it one time. 10+ times yeah totally, same goes for all of the 5s the day Terminal Redux came out. To each their own, but I personally don't do that for complex albums. It's like telling a girl you love her on the first date.
Agreed but no-one is hurt by a quick rating, as long as you change it later. I tweak my ratings all the time.
I don't think any of the songs here could have been on DeK. If they were then they'd be the album's lowpoint. Even if they do get better with more spins, they wouldn't fit on there, because DeK was great right away.

One of the highlights for me is that these songs feel like they wouldn't be on DEK.

maybe I'm crazy but I think this album is more immediate than anything they've done previously, aside from DEK. Really enjoying this so far

What do you mean by immediate?
|
| |
I think the first few songs on the album hooked me a lot faster than, say, the first few tracks on Last Fair Deal (except for dispossession, awesome song) and the Great Cold Distance. Same w/ Brave Murder Day -- the first time I listened to brave I thought it was boring, but it grew on me until I really loved it. So...I guess that's what i mean.
Though I'm about halfway through this album now and I can totally see where it will take as much time to sink in for me as any other katatonia album.

I got hooked by it surprisingly easy, yet it sure ain't one album to dismiss after one listen.

@ CamiloG No, I actually wasn't aware that one could change their rating.. sheesh, talk about a double dose of embarrassment. Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate you letting me know. I've been reading here for many years, but haven't posted much or reviewed at all (despite reviewing for Terrorizer and Metal Maniacs back in the late 90's/early 00's). Cheers mate

@ Flugmorph.. call me crazy, but I SWEAR that guitar solo at the beginning of "Passer" sounds just like Jeff Loomis. The tone AND the style of it sounds just like him; I would be surprised to learn if it actually wasn't him. Can anyone who has their liner notes verify if there is a note of a guest spot on the track?

I'm pretty sure that it's Roger Öjersson (Tiamat) the new guitarist. I know he plays leads on a few songs on this album.

Yeah he's the new guitarist.
