I'm a believer you don't necessarily need to like or even respect an artist to enjoy their music
I doubt I'll hate this album but I'm now really intrigued

I saw that quote too and immediately thought of how self-congratulatory this album is.

I really am not digging this at all.
I know it's meant to be sorrowful, impassioned and grandiose, but it just falls flat on me.
Probably doesn't help that I've never enjoyed her voice, and OPN production deserves space to breathe rather than this level of crooning over the top. My feelings on the politics and allegory on here are pretty irrelevant as to single her out for ham-fisted grasps at issues and emotions seems redundant in comparison to anyone else who isn't that great of a songwriter, just the overall sound leaves me feeling cold and pretty disinterested.

You certainly don't need to like or respect an artist to enjoy his or her music. I don't even resent music being appropriated as a vehicle to promote one's point of view. However, when you lack any sort of intelligence or subtlety in the delivery to the point that you're singing crap like "blow my head off" when you're not even in touch with what you're singing about, I find almost nothing worth hearing.
It does not take any level of skill or intelligence to be abrasive.

I'm strictly speaking about the lyrics in my comments, as they are all I have read, but this seems like a temper tantrum dressed up with big name production.

Couldn't have worse hair if they tried

Worse than Chamakh

Great comparison, that excuse for hair is awful. Referring to Marijuana Chamakh of course.

""A lot of the music scene is just a wanking, self-congratulatory boys club," she said in 2012. "
that's hilarious, cuz that's exactly what this album is

Yeah, I'm not going to indulge her savior complex by listening to this. Reading the lyrics was bad enough.

The lyrics don't seem self-congratulatory to me, or guilt ridden, but full of pain. Of someone who can't fit in.
|
| |
We are all full of pain for different reasons but that's no excuse to pen lyrics completely devoid of intelligence or unique criticism. This is exactly the kind of self-fellating nonsense that leads people to believe questions deserving serious critical debate can be boiled down to some arbitrary sense of right versus wrong.
Edit: keeping it simple but Jesus I can't stand people who boil down complex issues to "BLOW MY HEAD OFF/SPILL MY CRYSTAL GUTS" and get hailed as genius.

the lyrics are the written equivalent of one of those facebook memes that have bad compression and some weird "enlightened" group's logos plastered on it over some picture of a dead person with text yelling "DID YOU KNOW THE US GOVERNMENT MANDATED DRONE STRIKES ON INNOCENT SYRIAN CIVILIANS" and nothing else.

Slacktivism, is what it is. Some people need to fool themselves into thinking they're inciting change.

Lol wait so you didn't actually listen to it

No, but I've said nothing about the music. I've read the lyrics and that's enough to justify my comments.

(i listened to it)
regardless of how the actual album sounds, you cant really deny that the lyrics at their written level here says enough about the overall quality of this record for a person. Introducing "intelligent" pop production doesnt really change much for a record like this trying to be politically conscious.

I've only heard a few songs but not liking this at all.....

The lyrics really aren't that bad though. At least for what she is trying to accomplish.
I can see the problem you have with them, but damn the 1s and such are harsh
