I liked it.
It loses marks for being too bloody long.

Each album these guys have put out since Scenes from a Memory has been worse than the last one (only exception being Black Clouds). Based on what I've heard from this album so far, the trend is continuing.

Nah, I'd still say Systematic Chaos is the worst one of their latter era.

Ehh maybe, The Dark Eternal Nights rips tho.

Willie, in fact Wildoer was one of their choices in the final act of their drumming interviews to replace Portnoy. So was Marco Minnemann.. I still don't understand how they could have let this one go...--
Those are the two I was thinking of that would have been much better than who they chose (at least for the fans). Of course, the band probably loved picking the yes-man that cried when he found out he got the job. They knew he was their bitch for life.

I don't think the drummer really matters that much.
Its like watching Ian Mckellen in The Hobbit, the actor can only work with what they are given. So the drummer can only drum what is written .

I still maintain that Mangini is a top-tier drummer who is basically on autopilot because he's in a terrible band. He even keeps up with Dennis Chambers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BahJjFWgsdc
Not only does he have incredible technical ability, but he has very high quality creative ideas.... when he wants to.

this album is actually pretty good if you like their softer side......very reminiscent of some of the tunes on Scenes and the second disc of 6 degrees.....didn't care for it the first time through though, listened 3X so far and am enjoying much more......i'll be purchasing it for sure
no wank!

agreed with your review Beardog, especially about Labrie - he's better on the slower tunes opposed to singing heavy metal tunes......length is an issue as well

if anything I would've cut those NOMAC interludes, they just aren't necessary.

I think the NOMAC interludes are nice breaks from the orchestra and piano; the 2nd to last one had a cool trip-hop vibe going on if I recall.
All the new things they try on this album are great, but then many songs sound like a rehash of previous work. The outro groove-solo on "A New Beginning" ... they need to do more of that.

When 2285 Entr'acte started I thought I was listening to The Illumination Theory from their last album. Don't even have to listen to the rest of the album to know it's a 2.5.
