Those opening notes are perfect indeed.

Ok I'm realizing I was foolish to ever believe this album is anything other than perfect.

This might have my favorite piano playing on any album. Everything about this is amazing but the atmosphere the piano creates and how it melds with and embellishes the rest of the instrumentation is just stunning.

The lounge vibe :D
That's why this album has the best atmosphere of all the 'chop discog

Flotus and Mr. M also have amazing atmospheres.
I like their first few a lot too but they're a bit too quirky and are missing that level of atmosphere to make them truly amazing.

'Quit Smoking' has a strong atmosphere but I agree, the three listed above plus the first eight songs on 'Nixon' (the album changes atmosphere after that) are the most atmospherically rich.
'Damaged' has a vibe all its own too thinking about it too.
I think the only album which could have worked at its atmosphere a little more is 'What Another Man Spills' which just varies in style a bit too much and sadly had the potential to be as incredible as this if it locked in on the sort of vibe the first two songs and a few of the others display.

Most soothing album of all time and Wagner might have one of the most relaxing voices in music (he's even better on Ohio though I do prefer this album overall).
Btw nice 5 Boney

Fair warning, those tags (chamber pop and alt-country primary, slowcore and Americana secondary) are a bit misleading; this thing definitely has elements of all those genres but the overall vibe is pretty unique and difficult to classify.

Spun the deluxe reissue of this recently, "The Puppy and the Leaf" is such a great song

"The Gettysburg Address" is a stunner as well. "The Puppy...." is probably the best bonus track though.

My faves have to be "The Puppy," "The Fadeaway Jumper," and "Greylines in Heaven." I love how there are a whopping 16 bonus tracks totaling a greater length than the original album. One would think two straight hours of this sort of stuff would be too much of a good thing, but not so

Hang on, 16 bonus tracks?! I only have the 8 on the reissue. Where can I get these?

I found a download of the full deluxe version (already bought the reissue from Merge) and I agree with Greylines in Heaven being among the best of them. Not many were as good as the original eleven but man I just love everything about this record so, so much.
