His mixtape and first 2 LP's were fun, genuine and helped shift the paradigm of rap music and it's stereotypes.

End of song 3 with the Beevis and Buthead sketch is so cringey, referring to this as the greatest album ever.

This is one of those albums where listening to a song or two doesn't give you an appreciation of how bad it is.

I fired it up because curiosity got the better of me (I know nothing about Cudi's music beyond Day N Nite). First track lands and I'm thinking okay, it's intentionally a bit minimalistic and simple, hey the production is solid, there's some cool layering effects. Aight, kinda repetitive but no big deal.

Second track, more elementary guitar, still I'm not ready to call it the worst album ever, I can see some merit in what's going on even if it's not especially well done. The lyrics are basic but have a melancholy to them that appeals to me.

Then it just...

...doesn't...

...get...

...better.

After, oh, a baker's dozen tracks of what sounds like Cudi figuring out a single solitary guitar riff, the kind almost any kid who gets a new guitar for Christmas can make up by the time Valentin's Day hits with all the same emotional maturity of being alone when that day comes, and then trying to slap a song together around it, any charm or appeal that might have existed early on is just evaporated.

I wanted to like this album. Or at least, I wanted not to hate this album. I have a profound respect for musicians who just go off and let themselves make something that's a huge departure from what's expected of them and are willing to make an album that's bad but what THEY wanted over an album that's good but not from their heart. Plus, with everyone beating the album down, I was just hoping people were on a meme train and it was more like a 2.5-3 album that people were trashing because it's funny.

Nope!

I'll ignore the dumb lyrics. I'll overlook the wildly unnecessary Beavis and Butthead bits. What infuriates me about this album is it's a case of go-nowhere composition put through an auteur's production. Each song has SO much effort put into wringing the best sound out of each track, with tons of layering, effects, the guitars and drums themselves sound REALLY GOOD, but what's actually there is just total nonsense.

The album sounds like Cudi got high as hell, locked himself in a studio for a weekend and just recorded whatever came to mind, then when he sobered up spent a month painstakingly arranging, mixing, and mastering all of his stoned nonsense as if what he'd captured a profound glimpse into the soul of a genius ahead of his time.

Cudi clearly thinks this album is going to be looked back upon with the same reverence as In Utero or The Holy Bible, and damn I would have been so happy if he'd made that album, but... no. Just, no.

I have a feeling Cudi is kinda onto something with this record.

Yeah, it's bloated and extremely grating most of the time, but I feel like this record could altogether be deemed demo material. The worst thing about it, is how he treats it like it deserves to be released for purchase. This guy should just already put a band together and have the patience to sit back, watch and learn, so he'd finally be able to understand how to put a great song together and not waste his every potential by having no idea how to differentiate between good and stupid ideas.

Eh I think he's a masochist, probably suffered some eye opening things that turned him off in the rap industry/scene, his insecurity about his music is written all over him and I guess all he wants is to be loved and appreciated for his work and can't handle the harsh reality that maybe with a guitar in hand he sucks as an artist. Part of me wonders what the hell happened in the past few years that would make someone throw away arguably being the top rapper in the game to be a lousy guitar musician.

Title Track.

No, WZRD was no band, it was a borderline bullshit project by people who clearly had no idea what they've been doing. Kinda like this actually. I meant a band of people who know about good songwriting.
