pistol is definitely the worst thing ive heard out of them. song is an assault to the ears. that said, the new single is not good by any means and is completely devoid of memorability

Set up two playlists for the two MM albums we've been discussing:
Strangers abridged: (32 mins)
1. Stranger to Ourselves [4]
2. Lampshades on Fire [4.5]
3. The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box [5]
4. Coyotes [4]
5. Pups to Dust [4]
6. Sugar Boats [4] One of their better Tom Waits tunes
7. Wicked Campaign [3.5] Modest Mouse trying to be The Killers/The National...almost works
8. Of Course We Know [3.5]
Good News abridged (34 mins)
1. The World at Large [4.5]
2. Float On [4.5]
3. Ocean Breathes Salty [3.5] Possibly, for me, their most overrated song
4. Bury Me With It [4]
5. Bukowski [4.5]
6. The View [3.5] Cool intro...oh there's more of the song unfortunately.
7. Blame it on the Tetons [4]
8. The Good Times [3.5]
'The Ground Walks...' is what tips 'Strangers' a little above 'Good News' for me, but both albums are a bit of a mess. I might prefer 'Lampshades' ahead of 'Float On' even though it's the third time they've written the same song really (see also 'Dashboard') - 'Lampshades' sounds more manic. 'World at Large' is a better opener than 'Strangers' but that's still a decent scene setter.
I think 'Strangers' has two massive problems...tracks 3-5 kill all momentum early and are pretty average, as is the closing stretch of the three songs before the closer.

Really? I would put OBS in a MM top 20

fogza - I think the fact I don't like the approach/production of that song might explain why I don't really bond with 'Good News' in general
If people rave about that song then you're also probably going to love 'The View' and then the whole album is making sense, so I see that's where the 3.5+ rating are coming from.

To me it's the most successful song of theirs that has that beefier, less idiosyncratic modern rock vibe, I just love the dynamics of it. The other song that pulled it off was People as places, but for different reasons.

Ah, not too fussed about 'People as Places' either so this is all making sense

The weirdest thing with post-M&A Modest Mouse is how frustrating the songs can be - in a lot of cases most parts of a song are pretty good but there are one or two elements that are kind of annoying or that otherwise throw the whole thing off. Oftentimes that takes the form of there being a song with multiple sections where one sucks but the rest are great. Or it’s Isaac doing something annoying with his voice but the guitar playing is good.
In fact Isaac is very often the worst part of a later-period MM song, which is weird because up until this point he was one of the most captivating and unique vocalists and lyricists in indie rock. I guess he’s still pretty unique here but almost any time he yells on the later albums it just sounds like schtick.

This and We Were Dead also have similar structural situations where both have really great opening and closing runs but have patchy middle sections. Again I’m a bit generous giving both 4s but they both have a lot of highlights, and the stuff I mentioned above means that I still like quite a bit about even a lot of the weaker songs on them, there’s just something holding them back.

I reckon old Issac is a bit of a bellend

Also Doof my view on “The View” is the exact opposite of yours, I don’t like the intro or the parts where it comes back but the rest of the song is great.

I really don't like the section:
'As life gets longer, awful feels softer.
Well it feels pretty soft to me.
And if it takes shit to make bliss,
Then I feel pretty blissfully.'
Rest of the song is ok to me

'I reckon old Issac is a bit of a bellend'
Always equated him to being the next generation's Billy Corgan control freak'y type - might be wrong

"Most of the stuff where Brock sounds like a nutcase doesn't really work but ignoring that it's a great poppy indie album. "
Yea it's really what makes Ocean Breath Salty the weakest of the "more than decent" tracks on here. Like what are you doing Isaac?
It's really weird to me how so much of this album, even the really good stuff, doesn't sound like Modest Mouse, but then you have Bury Me With It/Dance Hall(during the verses)/Bukowski back to back, all of which feel very LCW.

Ocean Breathes Salty is my favorite song on the whole album tbh, that dreamy lead guitar melody is pure ear candy.

coming around on this a bit more now that ive realized (minus interludes) this only has 3 tracks that rlly take me out of the flow (dance hall, devils workday, satin in a coffin). plugged those holes w ive got it all most, history sticks to your feet, and guilty cocker spaniels, which results in a pretty cohesive breezy listen

The crowd screamed: "SACRIFICE THE LIVER!"
