I would not call the lyrics of Blue and Pinkerton "ham-fisted." "The world has turned and left me here/just where i was before you appeared/and in your place, an empty space/has filled the void behind my face"? that's fucking brilliant. on those earlier albums, Rivers had a way of using a tone of "teenage poetry," but the lyrics still had substance. i think that's what makes them so endearing, and so different from the bands' later albums.

Half of it is blatant filler, a quarter of the remaining half isn't anything special, the last quarter is pretty good. Slave is very good.
