Sent, man these songs are great, the electronically enhanced vocals sound way better and are the main focus with mild harsh vocal use, but it works. Not really much in the way of death metal left in the songs but they rule anyway.

Well, pretty sure we don't have rep here like we do in the forums. How else would you suggest I get it to them?

I love this album but find it really hard to listen to sometimes. So much going on at once. The new material on the 08 promo is fantastic, though. If the rest of the new album is as good as Integral Birth I can see myself preferring it to Focus.

The promo, or the new album? The promo is out now and you should be able to find it easily enough on the internet, the album...no idea.

I first heard this album last summer, and to be honest, it absolutely blew me away. I've been into tech metal for a very long time but I hadn't heard anything quite like this. Everything is so varied yet comes together fantastically. I find it hard to pick a favourite track, but 'I'm But A Wave To...', 'Sentiment', and 'How Could I' seem to just stand out above the rest for me.
The vocals are a bit weird, and I think that early 90's production really didn't work in their favour (such as the death metal growls - if you see some live vids of cynic you'll hear how powerful his voice is, but on the record it sounds pretty weak) and the scooped mids on the guitars can make a lot of the guitar parts fairly unclear.
You'd have never guessed I was a cynic fan with this av :P
Good review man. You've covered pretty much everything!

Pretty much my thoughts on the album as well.

I can't get into this as much as I would like because of those robotic vocals. It may take me a couple of listens to appreciate it more and probably then I'll change my rating because instrumentally this is good.
But for now 3.5
Cynic have a new album coming out this year, if they can leave out the silly robot vocals I'm sure it will rule This Message Edited On 05.30.08

The "Silly robot vocals" were done as an afterthought while in the studio in order to try to give the vocals more diversity. If you listen to any of the demos that came out before this album they were pure death vocals.

I don't really mean that they're silly. They're just not to my taste, I will probably have to listen to the album more before I get used to it.
And unfortunately I can't get hold of any of the demo's they did before or after this
I'm really liking "How Could I" off this album actually (Y)

I copied it, so you can delete your e-mail off here now if you want. I'll send it in about six hours.
One of the most unique things about the “Focus” recording are your own vocals, which were produced by a Digitech Vocalist controlled with a keyboard. How did the idea for this come about?
"I was at the time struggling with our record having just raw vocals and I began exploring some melodic type of voice to be a part of our sound. I tried singing without the effect but it didn’t have the edge and otherworldly quality I was looking to capture. When I stumbled upon the Vocalist, I found a patch that with a little editing was perfect. It was computer generated yet sounded emotional, like a crying alien."

This is amazing. Robotic vocals were easily to hear past.
