summit rules too. this band is a gem, so much to love about them. everything they do is so focused, even down to the artwork, always feels like they have a clear vision for what they want out of their music, especially their LPs. the next one should be fuckin awesome, hopefully it's not such a long break this time.

it's prob gonna be a while again til Magus gets released according to interviews
|
| |
they been saying for a couple years it would be their take on more black metal inspired material, which i can only imagine would be really interesting.
|
| |
this might be a little long to be a real classic but it's definitely not bloated, this is
some of their best songwriting,
not a lot of wasted space at all imo

they definitely are masters of their crafts that is very fucking rare to see, so no doubt that will be another great work

to me this is classic, length to me is no issue if all the tracks have the right amount of power. I
can listen to Autechre's Exai for example and that's 2 hours long. I love my doom more than most on
this site (those that can't handle 75 minutes of music)and this blew me away by how professionally
written and executed this all was.

I absolutely love long albums but I have to take them at small doses sometimes. If they're engaging throughout and really damn good, then by all means make long albums.

i would mostly agree. i think this easily justifies its length and the material is really engaging. tyrant and summit are almost as good really, and there's something to be said for their lengths being a little more digestible. on the other hand though, a work of this size lends a different kind of weight to it, and even from the beginning of free will it has "listening to a masterpiece" feel. i think it's a lot to do with poise though, they are so sure-footed by this point in their career that i just think they still feel heavy and substantial regardless of actual content. hopefully that makes sense.
