I'm sure he's sat at home now, and he sensed something

This and Stupid Dream are their best. Steven Wilson can write sad pop like nobody's fucking business.

This is one of their best, which was sort of the farthest in that direction they could've gone with that sound. I'm happy with the left turn they took afterwards, and the majorly increased success that resulted from what came after this.

There's some essential PT here (Hatesong, Russia On Ice, Shesmovedon)
|
| |
Best song on here is easily "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled". "Russia on Ice" has great first half but then it loses it in the second part which is rather pointless (same with "Ancestral" btw). Yeah "Hatesong" is very good but "Shesmovedon"? Come on
Barbieri shines throughout the whole album though. He may be even better here than on Signify.

Shesmovedon has an amazing second half.
not to sure about russia on ice though. other than its an epic song i dont really get where all the praize comes from

About "Russia on Ice" again. The first half is about sadness, alcohol and depression, adequately soft and dreamy, it feels exactly like being in a bar and drowning your sorrows. But then the second half comes in through and it's suddenly "you know what? let's have a HEAVY JAM for no reason". What's the purpose?? Is it to show that the protagonist is suddenly angry? Is he destroying the bar now or what?
And not only that. The first half is so subtle, the textures are dense etc, it's crafted perfectly, while the second half is so damn coarse, it's like a punch in the face and in the worst of ways. You've got a great mellow track and then the antonym-of-subtle-bassline comes in and says "FUCK YOU, a heavy riff comes in 3... 2... 1...". booooooriiiiing

Yeah I never liked the 'heavy' section at the end of Russia on Ice. Sometimes when they try and do the heavy riffs they just fall way off the mark and don't have the impact I think was intended.
Shesmovedon is a killer song, that solo man

Many songs from the "Recordings" B-sides compilation could have been included perfectly. Buying New Soul, Disappear, Cure of Optimism and In Formaldehyde are all much better and more interesting than some tracks from this album - which is a fine one nonetheless.

Lol I used to like jizz over this band. I'll always love them, but the listening of them has definitely dropped a shit ton over the past year.
