I suppose but I think PT carry an expectation for lyrics that are better than FoaBP or even some of The Incident

The lyrics on fear fit with the concept at least, but yeah they could have been much better.

Taken out of context they suck pretty hard, but at least they do work with what Wilson was going for. Even if it does contain some pretty terrible lines.

i like them. fit with the concept perfectly. i don't mind that they're lol worthy. i don't take them that seriously. i just like the vocal melodies and the overall composition and execution of everything else

I don't expect that much from SW considering he's not an expert lyricist. He's a much better musician.

it helps for me that i'm just not a lyrics guy at all. i mean, if i come across some good lyrics i will be all about them but its just not the first thing i notice at all

Couldn't agree more. But he has showed some glimpses of hope on Strip The Soul and Arriving Somewhere

Yeah lyrics aren't as important to me as composition. If they're great then thats a bonus but pretty
much none of my 5s for example I rated for the lyrics, its about the overall aural experience.

I don't care what anyone says, The Blind House is his best lyrics yet. I wish he'd always write like
that.
The lyrics on El Cielo is one of the biggest reasons for my 5 for it but other than that yea amazing
lyrics are pretty much a bonus. The music I notice first.

S'alright. Sadly Drawing the line is soon after which is probably one of his worst lyrically...

Its more the chorus melody that makes it bad

Holy shit the chorus is abysmal lol

thats the main reason why reading a lot of music criticism is a very difficult experience for me. a lot of reviews around the internet will be focused on the lyrics and the 'aesthetic' of an album and that's very frustrating because a lot of time that means nothing to me. i understand why those types of reviews exist, mainly because that sort of thing is more fun to write about, but a lot of times I wish there would be more talk about the "overall aural experience" as you put it

Sounds like SW tried to write a punk song and failed hard

I actually thought it was gonna be a great song until the chorus. I suffer through it purely to listen to the whole thing at once

Emyay that's why I don't really mention lyrics as much as I did before in my revs. When you first hear an album it's kinda hard to get to know the lyrics until you give it lots of time. I've memorized lyrics by hearing a song I fucking loved and listened to it all day, but you can't do that with a whole album haha

Especially if it's in a different language *cough* Sigur Ros *cough*

It really depends on the genre as to how important lyrics are. I mean lyrics are a huge deal when it comes to artists such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen where the lyrics are undoubtedly the main focus. And Jethro Tull wouldn't be my favourite band/artist if it wasn't for Anderson's incredible lyrics.
When lyrics aren't the main attraction then they have to be fairly bad to put me off something. Sadly Wilson's lyrics really do rub me the wrong way and with most PT nothing about the music really makes up for them for me.

yeah i mean, i have a really good memory for that kind of thing. most of my friends are astonished and kind of make fun of me for knowing the lyrics to "every. damn. song." but like you said mongi, when you're reading a review of something you haven't even heard yet and its talking about the lyrics, i just can't really identify with that
