"I do feel like a lot of the songwriting in the record follows familiar progressive tropes that I don't enjoy much. Maybe the biggest example here, one I really dislike but didn't find a place for in this review, is "Alpha." The way that song begins and builds up-- man, if it had kept that pace I would've loved it more than any other track here. But as we know, it takes a turn about four minutes in, into that Middle Eastern-inspired melody"

Just like I said with A.M. War before, this unexpected turn in Alpha is the exact reason that I love song. I honestly am not trying to troll here, and I appreciate the discussion, I think its just funny how music can cause completely different reactions in people. The very reasons that Omaha has listed, that cause him not to enjoy this record, are some of the same reasons that I actually enjoy it. Again, good review because it sums up wonderfully a sentiment that I can totally understand people having, its just that these disorientating and dissonant elements happen to resonate with me personally, and are the very reasons that enjoy the record so much.

Speaking of middle-eastern, that type of scale is overused on this album.

I completely agree with you, and it's fascinating to me to hear these sentiments from you. It's cool that these types of albums can be interpreted accurately in so many angles, you know?

Also, I wanted to apologize for my bitchy response to you in that BTBAM thread a few weeks back. You were bringing up some valid points that I interpreted in a silly way, and I always value the discussion you bring into these threads. This one in particular has made me realize that.

Omaha stop being so nice. You're showing everyone else in this thread up!

But in response to someone enjoying the dissonance and 'fragmentedness' of this, I can definitely see how. I just think it's been done a lot better before, but I guess you have to show you know the rules (Sound Awake) before you break them (this album) so I have to give them kudos for trying something bold. I just don't think it worked out as well as it could

I think there is a balance between experimentation and accessibility that they reached on Sound Awake.

Agreed with JS19. This is an admirable effort that yielded a few questionable results.

It's really not bad, just not great, especially when following Sound Awake.

or well, one of three people who isn't incredibly disappointed. It's obviously not as good as Sound Awake but I don't see it as the modern classic that everyone else does, so that has something do with it. It's definitely their best album though.
