Iowa was most definitely supirior then their s/t (which was a waste of time).

I've basically outgrown nu-metal all together, so I don't know what to say about this one. The novelty of a new album has worn off, and my excitement I got from hearing about all the solos on the new record was killed after finding ONE good solo.
ALL 3 Slipknot disc's rule and the new one which is different but awsome unless you like punker crap which most of u do and thats why u have to post nasty comments about a band that doesnt sing about "loosing the girlfriends" and skateboards so get a life and post crap in the punker section and leave the real bands be!!! :thumb:
Thank you so much. Finally a true metalhead with the balls to speak out.

i don't agree, slipknot vol.3 every song was good except number 6,8 took a little bit to get good,11,and 14

slipknot was always my favorite band and after i listened to the whole cd I'm so obsessed with them. There guitar riffs sound sick, solos; fast and good.
Corey taylor sounds good yelling and singing softer.
Tracks 4,5,10 are the best songs ever! Slipknot rules!

Iowa was an awesome album. Favorite album before i heard vol.3 The best tracks on iowa was people=s***, my plague, and left behind. Anyways, this is the last slipknot album, or that's just what people think because they broke up once and everybody that they'd never get back together and here they are now.
I feel the same way about this album. After hearing their first two singles, I was hoping for another Iowa, but with more accomplised musicianship. But now they just sound more like Corey Taylors other band, Stonesour, which isnt nearly as good as Slipknot!
i agree totally, this is slipknot as stonesour

Slipknot- Volume3(The Subliminal Verses), personaly i think is the best cd to come out in a while. Ive known about slipknot for half of my life and never really appriciated their music much because it was just a bunch of screaming. I never realized what was under all of the screaming, ex.- the guitar riffs and solos, the sound effects, the percussions, etc. This new album really cought my attention. The guitar and vocal especially. Its almost like they have changed their style completely. Corey's voice has to be one of the best voices in the buisiness. When you listen to a song he goes from like a really thick scream to a soft wisper. And when i listen to the music it seems like the riffs and solos never stop. But the thing that caught my attention the most is the drumming. In my opinion, joey jordison is the best drummer in his music catagory. He makes the whole cd come together. Im not going to rate the songs, because by now you should all know what i rate each one of them. And if i had to pick a fav, it would be Duality because the guitar just blows me away. Thanx for reading my post and i hope you have a better perspective on slipknot's music now.

I liked this album a lot more, because some parts were genuinely heavy and it was eclectic. They've grown up.

I agree with the first two paragraphs on your post, but disagree with the third. I own Iowa, MFKR, and heard all of s/t. I thought this one was decent, Iowa I don't listen to much anymore, and MFKR was nice and experimental (ultimately very innovative), but s/t I thought was just pretty generic and bland with the exception of a few songs.
But I can't really count as a credible source since I'm not the biggest fan of the band.

I really liked the acoustic, but to the threadstarter, take the heroin needle out of your arm. Slipknot never was and never will be emo.
And I just need to vent how pissed I am at people constantly saying the band sold out with this album. It's their music, and they can change and experiment with whatever they want to. The band has only said about a million times they've just sort of expanded and tried new things (definitely nothing wrong with that). They've sold however many million records already, so you really couldn't hope to sell many more anyway. I just wish people would really know what they;re talking about before they post...
it's actually a half decent album.

haven't listened to it all the way through, but when me and all my friends goto another friends house, they always put on some metal, and get pumped up before a party. they usually stick this on now, and of the few songs they've put on, it's pretty good.

of what i have heard, i'll give it a 4/5. i'll get the whole thing one day.

**JoZ's Review: Endorsed by Bartender***

Before this CD came out, I had only heard two songs...Pulse of the Maggots and Duality. My friends could not stop talking about this CD, as they had been, well, 'maggots' since day one, pretty much. Now, these guys were not the kind to say 'OmFG this is the hardest sh*t I've ever listened to'. But Slipknot is definetly one of their favorite bands. Well, I'd often heard songs from them, here and there, but alot of it wasn't catching on...alot of it was just noise to me. Tons of distortion, screaming, double bass out the wazoo...etc. It seemed...disjointed, in a bad way.

Well, after hearing the new stuff, I figured it was time I sat down and truely gave these guys a chance. The two songs I'd heard were somewhat more polished sounding than the previous two albums (not counting MFKR, since I'd never heard of it till recently). Well, I sat down and listened to my friend's copy...and was pretty much blown away by the results.

I'm sure you all know the lineup on the album hasn't changed. They still have the same 9 crazy m'fers as they did when then S/T album came out, and this time, you can actually hear what they're doing...

Prelude 3.0
As the name might imply, this is an introduction. This has a very somber feel to it, with Craig actually getting a workout here...as there are all sorts of sounds and ambience going on here. The drumline is simple, as far as Jordison's playing goes...in fact, everything here is pretty low-key...this song is more about atmosphere than it is about ripping your throat out. For me, this is a welcome change. I don't want to draw intense fire by comparing Slipknot to the mighty Tool...but with a different guitar line, and better bassline...this could almost pass for something Tool *might* do, in the weird department. Not bad at all

The Blister Exists
Here's the Slipknot fury many have come to embrace. For once, you can hear the extra percussion, and if you listen, the bassline. At 40 seconds in, Sid gets into the action, which is also unusual. The lyrics show decided maturity compared to the M.O of "Fuck this, Fuck you, and it's time to die!!1one". This is a good song to showcase dual guitar parts...alternating between unison rhythm, and tremolo lead. Then we get the snare drum solo. Not done by Joey as I had first thought, but by Chris and Shawn, on marching band snares. I'll admit this does get slightly repetitive, but I consider it very cool...you don't see something like this very often. Another chorus or two, and more snare drumming ends this high energy piece.

Three Nil
This one is like controlled insanity, at least until the chorus of the song. This song is probably the closest to older sounding Slipknot material, with fast singing from Corey, intense double bass, and tremolo picking. Backup shouting from Chris and/or Shawn really adds to this song I think. I like the reference to Eeyore, something I didn't expect ("People line up to see the Great Big Mouth shut up and apologize"). Anyway...this song has one of my favorite choruses...it's pretty simple, but the guitar line and the added shouting...it just fits so well. There's a bridge section here which switches up the riffs, and moves in a slightly different direction, before moving back to the awesome chorus. Intense trem picking/double bass serves to lead us into the outro...

Duality
The single. Joey was quoted as saying this was one of their heaviest songs...something about the chorus being huge. Well, this song is relatively simple (except the drumline, it's nuts) but it delivers. This is a great song for showcasing everyone...dual guitar parts, a bassline that's audible, thick custom percussion...and great singing from Corey...the fast singing works very well here...not like his older stuff, which sounded like he was having a seizure...this seems like a controlled "I have you now" kind of sound, if that makes sense. I love the guitar/bass fill that happens in the second and last chorus, as well as the pinch harmonics. The buildup at the end of the bridge is just fantastic. This song gets a tiny bit repetitive toward the end, but it's high octane, so who cares? This song was also the first song I ever officially moshed to. Don't laugh, I enjoyed myself.

Opium of the People
I love this intro...and this song is very interesting. It is actually slightly progressive. What? Slipknot and progressive in the same sentence? Blasphemy! OMG WTF ur gay! Slipknot is teh nu metal wtfis wrong wit u!. Well, you can say that all you want (or don't, because you'll put yourself out there as an idiot)...but yes...AMG actually brought up this notion that this album was progressive...and while I am not going out too far on my limb...this is not the same kind of progressive as Tool, or Dream Theater, or any other band remotely similar...but this song does clearly progress from section to section. This song also goes between high energy and lowered energy several times...very good track.

Circle
...Is that...acoustic guitar? Is that...a bassline that is simple and effective? Craig getting work? Corey singing? Yes, yes it is...this is easily one of the best tracks on the album. Anyone who thinks that Slipknot playing songs with acoustic guitars, and synth strings background is bad needs to have their head examined, because this is a mournful track that is also powerful. This song also shows the lyrical maturity I was talking about, lyrics that are kind of...well, they are out there, and they stand out above that whole violent 666...etc...thing. The outro of this gets really weird with drums coming in out of nowhere, and odd samples and stuff going on.

Welcome
Another standout track, brings back the fury, big time...huge riffs, screaming...you name it, it's here. Sounds like Shawn is banging his keg again in this one too...but it doesn't have the same tone as Duality. Maybe it's Chris' keg being hit this time? Who cares. Energy picks up when Joey starts going insane during the bridge...then...guitar solo. Bunch of arpeggios and stuff, plus more...at least a good 20 or 30 seconds of solo...if anyone still doubted the guitar skills, you can sit down and shut up now. They have a bit of a second bridge before going back into another chorus or two, modifying it a bit before they end.

Vermilion
Arguably the best track on here...this one shows off everyone again...except maybe Sid, I can't think of anything he's doing here...anyway. This one has a slow, driving guitar line...yes, it's slow, but drives at the same time. Sounds like Paul has learned how to do fills on this one as well...or at least how to make them heard. Corey's singing is somewhat evil sounding on this song...slow, low...kind of stalker-ish...but kind of not? He alternates very well between singing and screaming in this song, which really adds. This song is also somewhat progressive...but I'm not sure if it's more or less than Opium...whatever. This song also features a great solo section...spanning about 40 seconds...it manages to go all over the place, but stay very controlled as well. I love the chorus and the long outro of this song, they are completely epic sounding...everyone's doing something a little different...the outro is not quite a minute long, but it's worth it...slowly fades until only Craig and a guitar are left...fades into...

Pulse of the Maggots
It's about time they got use of all 9 members...it took them a couple of albums to get it just right, but here's yet another song that does a good job showcasing their talents. Again...as of this second, I don't know where Sid is...but whatever. The intro here goes all over the place before settling into an intense main riff. Ahh there's another weird sound...maybe that's Sid? I dunno. Whatever. This might be their most intense song on the album, as it locks on, and doesn't let go. This has the solo that got alot of people singing Mick and Jim's praises big time...well...it's not bad at all...the trade off is pretty cool, and overall it fits the song, but...I personally feel that Welcome and Vermilion are better than this one. A good track, but possibly overrated by some people...

Before I Forget
I can't think of how to start describing this one...I think it progresses a little too personally, but it doesn't do it nearly enough as the other songs. The chorus is great here, pretty catchy actually, which...I think, is unusual for Slipknot...or maybe it's not...whatever. I like the pinch harmonics used during the prechorus...it's almost a dead ringer for a Petrucci PH (Whereas Duality was not). I like the bridge here...very percussion driven, even though it's not terribly fast...it's also another good section for harmonizing guitar parts...and I think Paul's doing a little more filling in there as well...good stuff. Another couple of choruses before the outro hits...we get some weird sounds and crap after the actual music ends though...

Vermilion, Part 2
If you didn't like Circle, you just might hate this song too. This is done only with Corey singing, two acoustic guitar parts, and some synth strings at times. This is a great song, however. Some people say that this sounds too much like Stone Sour...well, honestly, I think this fits better on a Slipknot record...it sounds dark, and etherial at times...which fits the mood of this album. There's piano in this one too, forgot to mention it...anyway. Corey's singing is at his best here I think. I love the chorus to this song...way more so than Three Nil. This is definetly a ballad type of song, and also a standout track.

The Nameless
Brings the energy up about tenfold...intensity only begins to describe this song...except for their clean guitar interlude...WTF? I don't think I've ever heard them use their electric without distortion. At least I think it's the electric, it could be acoustic I'm not sure. Anyway. This song sees Sid get alot of work...at least I think it's Sid, all the weird scratchy noises...another softer interlude, which gets extended this time. Then they switch it up again with a totally different bridge section...everyone's doing something...except Sid...I think. Singing in this song is more akin to older 'I'll slit your throat' Slipknot, but still sounds more polished. They do the interludish thing again...but this time with the distortion and such. Not bad, but not standout, IMO

The Virus of Life
Wow...this one is definetly way up on the weird-ometer...tons of odd sounds and such going on...this reminds me of an industrial sound to it...the percussion, the synths, the deep bassline...very...metallic sounding. Corey's singing is distorted or something, sounds kind of evil in being hidden...guitars come in, chugging along in time with the precussion and such. Weird sounds still abounding everywhere...guitars drop out, leaving only bass and percussion again...but they come chugging back in, doing weird bend/release things there...only to drop out again. This cycle seems to repeat itself...with variations here and there. If Slipknot was industrial, this is how it would sound, I think

Danger, Keep Away
Ok, now I'm pretty certain this is clean electric guitar...backed with a bunch of weird samples and sounds and such. Drums don't come in till 1:20 or so...still no bass from what I can hear...no extra percussion...this song is very minimal...it's not bad, it's nice to see yet another side of Slipknot...but it drags on. They should've either shortened it, or added more changes to it.

So...just what you've all been waiting for. The final rating. What do I think of this album?

5/5

Now, before you start gearing up to flame me...let me explain my rating.

This is by no means a perfect record. This is by no means the best record I've ever heard. So why the 5/5? Well, because for the most part, this album takes about 3 steps forward from Iowa and the S/T albums. They have 9 members, and they finally use them all. Yeah, I know, there were moments in the previous albums where you got to hear Craig do something, or Sid do an intro...but honestly, they could've made S/T and Iowa with Mick, Jim, Corey, Joey and Paul and been done with it...those were the guys they were centered on. The onslaught of doubled guitar parts, the bass that got lost in the mix, Joey's insane drumming style, and Corey's "I'm having a seizure" vocals.

This album allows you to hear everyone doing something, on most of the songs. Harmonizing guitar parts intermingle with double crunch. Basslines are actually heard and not simply felt. Chris and Shawn do more than headbang on their drums. Craig adds a whole lot to this album, tons of samples and synth backgrounds add texture and color to a good number of songs. Even Sid gets his freak on several times. Corey shows that he can actually sing (as if we didn't get that from Stone Sour) and sing pretty well when he wants to.

You don't have to like Slipknot. You don't have to like 'nu metal'. You don't have to agree with me when I say they aren't anywhere near nu metal anyway. But I do believe everyone needs to sit down and actively listen to this at least one time through.

This is not a Lateralus, or an Awake. This is not necessarily going to be remembered as a classic album. But the change from Iowa to this...is just unbelievable. They maintain plenty of their best (read: Marketable) attributes...while showing they can do so much more. They've gained at least one new fan because of it, and I recommend this to anyone.

Recommended Tracks:
Blister Exists
Welcome
Vermilion (1 and 2)
Duality
Circle

And please, no more flaming. :thumb:
