Well written but I happen to disagree with all the opinions here, strangely. Deftones is about lightheartedness, having fun with what you listen to. It's a band you gel and mosh with, not a band you sit through 5 minutes to get to the introduction to. They were around at the same time as Korn but that's probably as bad an association as you'd make with Deftones. They were definately not musical contemporaries, status-wise, with Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit.

There's no place for Celtic Frost or ISIS comparisons here really, this is not death or progressive metal. Those bands SPECIALISE in the sounds that they create, whereas Deftones is simply using elements to enahnce what they do. Dynamically, they've created an album where the songs can be heard collectively, you don't skip tracks. There is variety in every song and no approach is repeated.

Needless to say, if you were never a fan of their sound to begin with, there won't be much hope for you liking much of it at all.
