Why would you need to know Rush to review the album? I hate comparisons, even in this review you had to compare this album with their old stuff and call out they're not as good as they used to be. Well they don't have to. They can change and be amazing in a different way, even if they fail do be good in the same way they used to be. Take a look from a different angle.

Well comparisons are vital for everything

For example if this was the first album you ever heard it would probably be a 5/5 by default

The more albums you've heard the less likely you are to like other albums cuz you'll likely hear all the things you've already heard from previous albums

My review should have just been "WTF this isn't as good as TDAG! 1/5 because it's all about the comparisons bitch"

You're right but I don't think that what I said was completely wrong. Maybe I was wrong to use

the Rush thing an as argument for your comparison of Coheed.

What I understand of the review is that this band used to be better with their earlier sound andthat

they're trying to get there again, to find it again, but I don't think they want to. I don't think

that I heard any of this before and that they're unable to think of something new. It reads to me

like you want the old band back before even trying to get comfortable with this sound. I don't

expect you to like it, you may even hate it, but the band doesn't have to go seven years back in

time just to

be

good again.

Actually nevermind, you did give it a 3.5 so I kinda killed my own argument.

I get the point you're trying to make, but it's like you're arguing that he shouldn't expect this to

sound the same as their old stuff. And I'd agree with you on that, I just don't think that's the

point he's making and you're saying it yourself "they're not as good as they used to be". That's not

the same point as "they're not the same as they used to be".

We can all appreciate progression, look at GAIBS1 compared to SSTB. A lot of people would claim that

GAIBS is "as good" as SSTB, even though it sounds completely different. There's a difference between

comparing the sound of a new album with an old one vs. comparing the quality of a new album with an

old one.

Not to rant, and I agree with your point, I just don't think Sowing's review held any suggestion

that this was disappointed in the fact that it didn't sound like their old stuff (in fact, it seemed

kind of the opposite to me). He was just noting the quality of this in comparison to what the band

is capable of, which I actually think is kind of an important note to make in a review.

I haven't really been listening to these guys much since their Year of the Black Rainbow release. But hey, I was curious to see how this turned out so I'm listening to it right now.
