Hi all! New on the chat side of the page, been browsing for long though.
Katatonia... Hmm one of my favourite bands i must say. But this album, i don't know man. Like it was said before, i find it a bit bland. The contrast between the mellow and hard is not as distinct and i miss it. I agree the album is very consistent but i think that is a flaw actualy. I miss the catarsic parts like for instance on Viva Emptines (Criminals - my dreams, dreams of violence see them coming true... Or in Will i arrive - Look at me now, they have cut my hair...). I think it gave the songs something memmorable and special.
About the vocals. He sounds sad, but i liked him more when he sounded hurt . He only changes melodies, style is completely the same.
It must be said that i gave this album only two listens, but for now, for me it is not even near their best.

Raised it back up to its original 3.5
Hypnone, The Racing Heart and Ambitions have revealed themeselves to better songs than I initally thought.
The album is still lacking though, its just too sedate to exude emotion.

Hmm, ok I might revise that last comment (been listening to this while writing that) and this probably stands at least equal to the last album in that the weaker songs are not as weak. Some of these are growing on me more. Still feel like the sound isn't fresh enough to be really interesting. edit: actually this stuff is really growing on me now. This forest may not be immediately inviting but there are some beautiful trees in it.

Haven't listened to this album enough to rate, but might be a 4 for me. Liking it so far, as for you guys saying "boring"
you guys just aren't depressed enough :p
EDIT: Who feels like Hypnone is a culmination of everything they've ever done ever? (Except growliness)

NitND is my fav by them, but this one seems pretty good so far. Will end up in the 3.5-4 range. Time will tell

Yeah, it sure is a contender for AOTY, for me at least.

a lot of comments about Great Cold Distance being better. I think that album has more intersting guitar riffs, but this is album as a whole was excuted perfectly... Pretty flawless as far the band taking their strenghts from previous albums (songwritting, atmosphere, vocals, instrumentation) and combining them... My Album of the Year so far

This album is definitely growing on me with every listen, and I'm sure that will continue for a while. However, I doubt it will be able to dethrone The Great Cold Distance - at least for me. Though I suspect it will equal or surpass Night is the New Day.

It's so boring and I think i'm liking it less with every listen which is a shame as I really enjoy most of their other albums
