how come this guy doesn't realize how incredibly awkward these bluegrass parts sound?

are you talking about Lunn?
Because if so, he may have at this point.

idk he still tried to use those elements in roads, luckily not as largely as on here but it just doesn't work at all in his music
|
| |
I'll agree that they are clunky here but I don't mind them on Roads. Just like his "sloppy" drumming.

I remember not hating them on Roads but that album is all around better than anything else he's done so that's prob why.

Inclined to agree with that sentiment.

i liked how he took pretty much all of his influences sans crust punk and just smashed 'em together and added violins. Should've been a clusterfuck but the writing was good enough to pull it off.

was hoping I would feel differently about this one than a lot of you guys did :/ hard to believe he followed this up with roads to the north, it's soooo much better

i don't find the bluegrass (folk) to be offputting, no do i feel that it doesn't fit into the overarching theme of the album, nor do i find that it doesn't fit cohesively into the sounds of the album

i think the bluegrass parts are very awkwardly placed here and destroy all the cohesion the album might've had. the idea seems interesting on the paper but i find the execution really poor

the flutes are often SO grating on the ears.

*shrug* i think they're a bit high in the mix, but i don't think they sound out of place.
personally, i don't see any distinction between the bluegrass sections on this album and, say, a swedish folk song on a scandinavian black metal release being placed between songs. additionally, i think taking them out would actually destroy the cohesion, since this album is lunn's love letter to his home sate - taking them out would be largely disingenuous to what he wanted to convey with this record
that would just sound like a short, awkward social disservices repeat

i don't mean he should've completely cut the bluegrass parts out, they just could be way more subtle. here it sounds just clumsy
