I don't know how to rate this album. It's weird. I like the first two songs and Cryptogenic Desires, but the rest doesn't really manage to grab me. I'll have to give it a another careful listen or two.

or even three. This took me a lot to appreciate. Ask OmairSh how much of a grower this is!

It keeps growing indeed. What really amazed me so far is the songwriting skills of these guys. Every song has an unique structure. A lot of bands could learn a thing or two from these guys.

Jesus Christ, this just keeps getting better with every song. I won't be surprised if I'll end up rating this 5 stars.

Trying this album against after a some time with much more success. Especially Mediocrity Wins, Cryptogenic Desires, Painful Detour and the title track really stands out to me.

Thorn best track

Digging the hell out of the chorus in Mediocrity Wins, damn. Overall a peculiar, but amazing song. Forced Entry and Mb. Indifferentia are also something else.
After some getting used to, I'm really enjoying this album a ton. Easily their best out of the first three albums.

Yup it's definitely their best. The bass on mediocrity wins is so good
@sol: Thorn is in the top 3 for me probably. Beastly track

Still their best album. Coal might be "more consistent"--I do think it's a good album overall--but it's a bit too samey in regards to tone and pacing. I think The Congregation is a step up from Coal, but each time I listen to either of them, I just want to go back listening to Bilateral. It's the album that saved 2011 for me after such a disappointing release from Opeth with Heritage. All of the songs on here are just great for one reason or another, but Waste of Air is just ridiculous, especially from the 1:25 mark and beyond. Mediocrity Wins would also have to be one of the top songs as well in an album full of great tracks. But maybe I'm just biased towards slap bass in general.
I've listened to this album so many times that I've lost count, but I think right at this very moment would be the first time that Cryptogenic Desires gave me an extremely Parallel Minds era Conception vibe. It's mostly the chorus, but it sounds quite a bit like Roll the Fire to me. IMO that is an extremely overlooked album, and it's where Roy Khan was actually in a band that was exciting.

(^Kamelot is so much better than Conception but whatever)
I don't know why people always come up with Opeth or Dream Theater comparisons when it comes to Leprous. They are one of the few prog metal bands that are truly unique. Still don't get it why they're so underappreciated.

Maybe it's this uniqueness that puts some people off, dunno. It's a real shame, though.
(Conception rules, but the highest points of Kamelot are better)

That's probably the reason. The Congregation and Coal are among the most unique prog releases of the past few years imo. I can see why someone wouldn't like them at all, but it's still a shame. Also ... like I said, these comparisons to other prog metal artists are kinda irritating.
(Conception is great, but ... Epica and The Black Halo both slay every single Conception album ever imo. But ya, Kamelot might be my favorite band ever so what do I know.)

Yeah, and they also have one highly capable vocalist compared to other prog acts. He's such a joy to hear.
(I'd add Fourth Legacy and Karma to that, as well. But Kamelot is also one of my favourite acts, so what do we know, haha.)

Einar is sure one of the best. This is his most diverse vocal delivery, but Coal is his most impressive imo. I don't like some of the high-pitched vocals on The Congregation though.

Those vocals you mention didn't strike me as unpleasant, but it's been a while since that Congregation jam.

I think his best vocal performance is on this album (as is the performance of the whole band in every aspect)

It's only moments scattered over a few of the songs, especially Third Law and Moon.
Coal has The Cloak, The Valley and Salt, which are probably my three favorite Leprous songs, vocally and in most of the other aspects. Bilateral, MD Indiferentia, and Painful Detour come very close though, among some others.
