I'm not saying remission is bad or that everyone who likes it is trying to be cool or whatever, but some mastodon fans do give me that impression. IMO the fact remission is their heaviest album doesn't make up for the under-developed songwriting

for me, this album was a step up from CTS.
Still not on the level of their first three LPs. Way overproduced, and even though it was by design that it was more song-oriented this time around, it doesn't make the album on the whole easier to digest. There's just no overarching sense of concept, and that detracts from it a little bit.
but it has it's shining moments. Black Tongue is now one of my favorite Mastodon songs. Curl of the Burl, Stargasm, Thickening, Spectrelight, and Bedazzled Fingernails are also good. And All the Heavy Lifting.
There is a certain amount of filler. But it's an enjoyable listen. Solid. Also, the two extra tracks on the deluxe version are pretty good.
