You wonder what the fuck was going through his head and what exactly the circumstances were to go out like that. It just sucks to hear someone with kids passing away that early, no matter who they are

yeah, I wouldn’t want to speculate but you have to wonder why he was going that speed coming up to a toll in the first place, and to hit a concrete barrier so hard it moved (the police said they’d never seen that before)?

The only thing I can think is something distracted him. Maybe he dropped his coffee on his lap or something and it distracted him for the split second it took to crash

I'm thinking of what could've been had I mustered up the courage to approach him after the last time I saw Old Man Gloom live 3 years ago just to say a quick thanks and how much I appreciated his contributions to the band, Cave In, Zozobra, etc.
I never met him, but I've heard from several accounts from fans who had met/talked to him after shows that he was quite a humble if not private/quiet guy off stage that out of respect I just left him be after the gig and thought that the next time I'd see him with either of his bands I'd try again if the moment was right, but alas...
In an unrelated note, I never got around rating the rest of the Cave In discography (this is the only one I rated). Better fix that in his honor...

Gone way too soon, awful
RIP
This clicked with me hard about a month ago and it's still the only Cave In I've heard. Gonna have to jam the rest of their discog soon

I've only heard Until Your Heart Stops and it's absolutely nothing like this, this is cool so far though
Real shame about their bassist, love his screams from what I've heard

If you want something more heavier, Until Your Heart Stops is the album I steer newcomers to. Jupiter is considered their magnum opus (though UYHS would be that album for a minority). Antenna is their most mainstream/accessible sounding album...and whether or not that's a bad thing is entirety subjective. Personally, I think it's pretty good considering how well it's done compared to actual radio rock bands. Not their best album sure, but it doesn't deserve the hate it seems to receive by a sizable amount of the fanbase. The two subsequent albums Perfect Pitch Black and White Silence IMO at least brings the best elements of UYHS, Jupiter, and Antenna into one.
There's several EPs as well, but I'd focus on their LPs first.

All of their stuff worth mentioning is below
Beyond Hypothermia - Collectionof their early metalcore 7-inch releases, thrashy and melodic riffs, fast drumming and viscous screams
Until Your Heart Stops - Expands on their metalcore sound with epic song lengths and experimental bits. One of the best metalcore albums ever
Antenna - Anthemic radio-friendly alternative rock with one long and epic track in the middle
Perfect Pitch Black - Maintains the catchiness of Antenna but puts the guitars in overdrive and Caleb brings back his perfect growls at key points
Planets of Old - Great EP that mixes the rock and sludge of PPB with some of their early metalcore sound
White Silence - Firs six tracks are a perfect mix of noise rock, metalcore and post-metal with screams/growls from both Steven and Caleb. Last three tracks are two strange rock tracks that don’t really fit the album at all and a twinkly ending outro track that’s really nice

Come to think of it, of the releases you mentioned Beyond Hypothermia and Planets of Old are the only stuff I haven't listened to yet. Will rectify that soon though.
Marathoning the discography in honor of Caleb, I've noted how much both Antenna and Perfect Pitch Black clicked with me a lot better now than it did when I was in my previous Cave In heavy phase.

I gotta jam this. I've gotten more into Old Man Gloom than I have these guys.

I was introduced to Cave In (and pretty much most of the Hydra Head roster) through Old Man Gloom which in turn I was introduced to because I was into Isis. I’ve always preferred OMG to Cave In but for better or for worse by marathoning the discography after Caleb’s death, I’ve had a renewed appreciation and love for Cave In (and his Zozobra project too).
